On Jan. 18, 1928, she married Frankie Owen in Baker City.
He died on April 20, 1986.
In 1990 Pearl married Alfred Coombs, a retired rancher,
who died in 1994.
From the 1960s-1970s, she worked at various places in-

PORTLAND – Donald Creighton
Hanson, 84, of John Day died Sept. 22
in Portland. A Celebration of Life will
be at 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the
John Day Golf Course.
Mr. Hanson was born June 13,
1931, in Enderlin, N.D., the only child
of Martin and Alice Hanson. As a child,
he was given the nickname “Inky”
while working with his father at the
Enderlin Independent newspaper.
The family moved to Portland,
where he graduated from Lincoln High School in 1949.
He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, and served 2-1/2 years in
the Korean War as a senior radar technician. He was honorably
discharged in July 1953 to care for his medically fragile mother
after the sudden death of his father.
In 1957, he graduated from Oregon State University in Cor-
vallis with a degree in forest engineering. Later that year, he
started his career as a forester with the U.S. Forest Service on
the Deschutes National Forest.
While working out of the Bend of¿ ce, he met Nancy Mel-
land, a mother of three children – Dan, Peg and Andy. They
married in November 1966 and together they had a daughter,
Julie.
In 1968, the family moved to the Umatilla National Forest
where he worked on the Pendleton and Walla Walla ranger dis-
tricts as a resource assistant.
The family moved to John Day in 1980 after he was promot-
ed to district ranger on the Bear Valley District. He held that
position, which he described as the highlight of his career, until
his retirement in October 1988.
He spent his retirement years doing what he loved with the
people he loved. He played golf almost daily, went elk hunting,
pheasant hunting, ¿ shing and spent time with his good friends
and family.
In March 2007, he was blessed with a granddaughter, Sa-
vannah Grace. He loved spending time with her and watching
her grow up.
Don was initiated into the Bend Elks Lodge in January 1963
and became a lifetime member in April 1998.
Survivors include his children, Julie of Walla Walla, Wash.,
Dan (Janice Hagen) Armstrong of Tehachapi, Calif., Peggy
(Dean) Allison of Roseburg and Andy (Sarina) Hanson of Ba-
