Dayville seeks
entrants for 3rd
annual contest

Blue Mountain Eagle
DAYVILLE – There are
many sights that signal au-
tumn’s arrival: pumpkins,
apples – and scarecrows in
Dayville.
The town is seeking en-
trants – individuals, school
classes, groups, businesses,
etc. – for its third annual
Scarecrow Contest. This
year, the competition is open
to anyone in Grant County.
And yes, there are prizes
at stake.
Anyone interested can
stop by or call Dayville City
Hall to sign up and pick up a
T-shaped framework for the
scarecrow. The rest is up to
the imagination.
Completed scarecrows
need to be returned to City
Hall by Saturday, Oct. 3.
Judging will be Sunday and
Monday, Oct. 4 and 5.
Prizes will be awarded at
Dayville’s annual Fall Festi-
val at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct.
9 at the Dayville Communi-
ty Hall. The event includes
a potluck, cake walk and re-

Ruth Anne McPherren
June 20, 1931 – Sept. 13, 2015
OREGON CITY – Ruth
Anne McPherren, 84, of Prai-
rie City, died Sept. 13 in Ore-
gon City. A funeral service was
held Sept. 17 at Prairie Baptist
Church in Prairie City, with
interment at the Prairie City
Cemetery.
Mrs. McPherren was born
June 20, 1931, to Dr. John G.
Patterson and Grace Scott in Klamath Falls. She started school
at age 5 and graduated from college at 20. She attended Klam-
ath Falls High School, Willamette University and University of
Oregon, graduating in 1951.
On Jan. 25, 1958, she married Paul McPherren in Klamath
Falls.
She worked as a teacher at a number of schools before mov-
ing to Grant County, where she worked at Prairie City, Grant
Union and Mt. Vernon high schools. After 47 years of teaching,
she retired in 2000.
She was a member of Prairie Baptist Church, Green Thumb
Garden Club, Home Extension, Strawberry Grange and the
Prairie City Seniors.
She was active in her church and served as a board secretary
for several years. She volunteered throughout the community
in a number of roles, and was always willing to help anyone.
Committed to recycling, she was instrumental in running the
recycle center in Prairie City for many years.
Survivors include her daughters, Leslie (Jim) Repman of Van-
couver, Wash., Kathy (Roger) Johnson of Dufur, Jennie (Rhine)
Messmer of Silverton and Sharon (Mark) Fritsch of Oregon City;

two great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul McPherren;
brother, David Patterson; and sister, Jenny Patterson.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Canyon Creek
Fire Relief Fund through the American Red Cross or to the Prai-
rie City Senior Center through Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241
S. Canyon Blvd., John Day, OR 97845.

Tommy Colvin Jr.
July 15, 1925 – Sept. 15, 2015
Tommy Colvin Jr., 90, of Long
Creek, died Sept. 15 in Monument. A
graveside service will be held Sept. 26
at the Long Creek Cemetery at 11 a.m.
A reception will follow at the Friend-
ship Hall in Long Creek.
Mr. Colvin was born July 15, 1925,
in Miles City, Mont., to Tommy Colvin
Sr. and IO Dunlap. The family moved
to Grant County, where he attended
and graduated from Long Creek High
School.
His career was spent as a rancher/cattleman, working for his
father and himself. A challenge he accomplished was raising
livestock in the high desert of Nevada.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Shri-
ners and the Oregon Farm Bureau.
Survivors include many family members from Chehalis,
Wash., to Atlanta, Ga.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Grant Coun-
ty 4-H Association through Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241 S.
Canyon Blvd., John Day, OR 97845.
Richard Wayne Perry
Sept. 5, 1957 – Sept. 5, 2015
PAULINA – Richard Wayne Perry,
58, died Sept. 5 in Paulina. A private
Celebration of Life will be held at a
later date.
Mr. Perry was born Sept. 5, 1957,
in Vancouver, Wash., to Dale Perry and
Joan Reed. He graduated from Burns
High School in 1976.
He worked as a ranch hand and
millworker, most recently at Consoli-
dated Pine in Prineville.
Among his accomplishments and hobbies were calf roping,
EXOOULGLQJDQG¿VKLQJ+HHQMR\HGKDYLQJDEHHUZLWKIDPLO\
and friends, and had a special love for animals.
Survivors include his mother, Joan Reed; children, Richard
Wayne Perry II, Bailey Dale Perry, Kevien Jay Perry, River
Lloyd and Dustin Brown Perry; sisters, Juliana (Norm) New-
ton, Dale (Clay) Finley and Debra Perry; and brothers, Steve
(Teresa) Reed and George (Lisa) Reed.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dale Perry; and
grandparents, Eugene and Becky Ecklund.
Arrangements are under the care of Juniper Ridge Funeral
Home, 678 N. Main, Prineville, OR 97754.
