Restoring a Fox landmark
By Reiba Carter Smith
and Gaye Pruit
To the Blue Mountain Eagle
The old church in Fox has
long been a landmark in the
valley, but the tides of time
have taken a heavy toll on the
once-stately structure.
After walking around in its
shadow and peering through its
windows a person might feel the
chuch is hallowed. One thinks
of the long-forgotten joys and
sorrows of weddings, births
and deaths that seem to linger in
the silent whisper of the breeze.
Only the cries of birds nesting in
the broken siding and damaged
steeple offer any homage.
A few have become more than
aware of the plight of this once-
grand old church, established in
the 1800s, and are launching a
restoration campaign.
The John Day Pickers will
perform at noon, Sunday, Aug.
23, at the church. There will also
be a brief history presentation
on the church. The Long Creek
Historical Society will sponsor a
potluck prior to the music at the
old school house across High-
way 395 in Fox. Everyone is
welcome to attend.
All donations will be used
for repairs to the church. Any
interest in helping, or material to
make repairs would be greatly
appreciated.
