and on the road, for summer
basketball.
“We played a lot of basket-
ball this summer, logging a lot
of miles on the mini-bus, but
gaining valuable experience
and team chemistry,” said head
coach Steve Speth, adding the

played a couple of home games,
then participated in an overnight
tournament in Umatilla early in
the summer.
Eventually,
the
team
wrapped up the summer season
at a Gonzaga team camp in Spo-

piled a 5-3 record in one of the
top pools at the camp.
“We played teams from
Washington, Idaho, Montana,
Wyoming and Canada at the
camp,” Speth said.
Following the camp, the
team enjoyed time at the Sil-

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, before
the long bus ride home.
Players attending team camp

Mountain Eagle. Her win-
ning distance was 6 feet, 8
inches.
Mahayla, who was in
the children’s 7 years and
younger division, said this
was her first time compet-
ing.
When asked if anyone
else in her family was ever
a seed-spitter, she boast-
ed, “Nope, I’m the first
in my family ever to do
it!”
Her choice of seeds is
simple — “I just saw some
seeds in the watermelon
and got them.”
As for her technique —
without revealing any de-
tails, in case it’s a secret —
let’s just say she uses her
tongue and then “gives it a
good blow.”
For her efforts, Mahayla
won a 2015 “Seed Spitting
Champion” T-shirt.
“Maybe you’ll see me at
the fair someday wearing
it,” she said.
And
maybe
she’ll
wear it at the 2016 fair,
if she returns to compete
again.
