Grant County pie bakers take home awards

She attributes her winning
pies to “lots of years of experi-
ence” and lessons learned from
her mother and grandmother.

Charles George Amling , aged 73, of John Day and Mt. Vernon, suffered
heart failure July 30, 2015, while tending the Mt. Vernon Community
Presbyterian Church garden he’d designed and planted for the congregation.
Chuck was born December 23,1941 in Orange, CA, where he attended
grammar school at St. John’s Lutheran. He then went on to graduate first from
Rancho Alamitos High School, Garden Grove, Calif. where he played football,
basketball, baseball and was active in FFA, and then California State
Polytechnic University, Pomona, CA. where he earned a degree in agricultural
business. Growing up he worked alongside his mother and two older brothers in
the family rose business, Amling Roses, in Westminster, Calif.
After graduating from college, Chuck and his first wife, Jan, moved to Glencoe, Minn., where he
worked for The Jolly Green Giant Company. There they had two daughters, Becky and Babs. The
family then moved to Daton, Wash., where he worked for Statin Cannery as a field man. Lastly he
moved the family to Albany, Oregon where he worked for Albany Frozen Foods. Prior to his retirement,
he owned and operated Amling Farm, raising row crops and lastly raised flowers. Chuck and Jan
divorced in April 1997.
Chuck retired to Temecula, CA., where he married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Perry
Arthur, December 25, 1997. They lived in Temecula until her retirement from teaching in June 2003.
Chuck and his wife Patsy retired to “God’s Country”, Mt. Vernon / John Day in 2003. He loved the John
Day community and was known by “his boys” as Coach A. He enjoyed helping coach the line of the
Mt. Vernon Middle School football team that eventually went on to win the state championship. He
never missed attending a Grant Union football game and watching “his boys” play unless he was away
filming other games for the coach. Even after their graduation, he continued to follow their activities.
He also liked attending baseball tournaments at the sports park and Grant County School District
Board meetings. He spent numerous hours planning and tending his church garden. He enjoyed
spending time with his church family. He attended the weekly early morning Men’s Bible study and led
the Sunday morning Bible study. He loved spending time with his children, stepchildren, grandchildren
and stepgranddaughter, hunting and fishing the local lakes with his buddies. He was a member of the
John Day Elks Lodge and the Mt. Vernon Community Presbyterian Church and also served as an
Elder. He was an avid reader. He always looked forward to attending the bingo games at both the Elks
Lodge and later at the Mt. Vernon Community Center. He could always be found in the early morning
hours and again in the afternoon at the Silver Spur Restaurant in Mt. Vernon having coffee with and
enjoying the company of his numerous friends. They loved and respected the caring and integrity that
Chuck demonstrated in his life and his efforts to solve the educational problems in the schools. He
was recently elected to the ESD board of directors. He was generous in providing scholarships to
athletes. Chuck demonstrated his strength of convictions in more ways than most people will ever
know.
Chuck was preceded in death by his father, Albert John Amling, mother, Marie Isobel (Jardine)
Amling; grandparents; and numerous aunts and uncles.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Patsy Amling, and his daughters, Becky (Kirk) Stock and Babs (Brad)
Niva; grandchildren, Piper and Riley Niva; Patsy’s son Bob (Stacey) Arthur; granddaughter Hannah
Arthur and daughter, Lori Arthur; former wife Jan Amling, his brothers, A. John and Norman Amling;
numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, and his dog Muffy.
He was a blessing to and loved by many. We will always carry our memories of you with us.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August, 29, at the Mt. Vernon
Community Presbyterian Church.
Following the service, there will be a potluck lunch at the Mt. Vernon Community Center.
All are invited to share a meal, enjoy pictures and tell stories of Chuck and his life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Patricia Amling for the Coach “A” Scholarship Fund to
be set up at a later date.
One scholarship will be awarded to the Grant Union High School lineman of the year.

Donald Roy Harvey
May 19, 1952 – Aug. 5, 2015
BEND — Donald Harvey, 63, of
Monument, died Aug. 5 at St. Charles
Medical Center in Bend. A memorial
service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug.
15, at the Monument Cemetery, with a
potluck lunch to follow at the Monument
Senior Center.
Mr. Harvey was born on May 19,
1952, in Caldwell, Idaho, to Clarence
and Virginia Harvey. When he was a
teenager, he moved to Nebraska to live
with his grandparents, Pete and Fern Huff. His grandfather taught

ities while living there.
After he moved back to Idaho, he joined the U.S. Navy, serv-
ing off the coast of Vietnam on the USS Wichita. He served four
years in the Navy.
He married Valerie, with whom he had two daughters, Tiffany
and Tatum. They later divorced.
While working in Long Creek, he met Diana, whom he mar-
ried a few years later.
He enjoyed being outdoors. Before retirement, he worked as
the groundskeeper for the Monument Cemetery. He took great
pride in caring for the lawn and received many compliments on
the upkeep and beauty of the grounds.

tirement, he enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and
grandchildren and working in his garden and yard.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Diana Harvey, of Mon-
ument; daughters, Tiffany (Lyle) Issacson and Tatum Harvey, of
Moses Lake, Wash.; stepdaughters, Kristi Emerson and Rebecca
Grassl, of Monument; brother, David (Sue) Harvey, of Cascade,
Idaho; sisters, Peggy (Roger) Jacobson, of Meridian, Idaho, and
Phyllis (Warren) Fitzgerald, of Nampa, Idaho; nine grandchil-
dren; numerous nieces and nephews; and his uncle Bill (June)
Huff, of Elvaston, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Harvey
and Virginia and George White; and his grandparents, Pete and
Fern Huff.
