Torie Coalwell received
Female Swimmer of the
Year, earning 162 points and
21 first-place medals, eight
second place and two third
place.
Justin Hodge (11 to 12)
received Male Swimmer of
the Year, earning 122 points
and si[ ¿ rst-place medals, 12
second place and eight third
place.
Zeri and Isaac Janssen,
Katie Johnson and Sivanna
Hodge were given sportsman-
ship awards for their support
of not only their own team,
but others at the meets.
Swimmers
Myckee
Coalwell, Torie Coalwell,
Trevyn Coalwell and Justin
Hodge, attended all ¿ ve meets
this season and did not dis-
qualify in any events – they
received Dairy Queen gift
cards – so they could have
their “DQs,” Waldner said.
One of the Most Improved
awards went to Shanniyah
Hall.
“We’re proud of Shan-
niyah Hall,” Waldner said.
“Last year she took two weeks

He said it all began the
of swimming lessons, and the
transformation from her ¿ rst
time in the pool to making it
to the district meet was amaz-
ing.”
The athletes have to qual-
ify in their event(s) during
one away meet and one home
meet to participate in the dis-
trict meet.
Waldner said she was hap-
py with all the volunteers who
helped at the district meet and
the John Day Invitational,
which was held the previous
week. She noted the only
people paid to be at the meet
are the coaches. The refer-
ees and people helping with
hospitality, concessions, re-
corders and many others are
volunteers.
“I’d like to thank all of
the volunteers we had for the
John Day Swim Meet and dis-
trict,” Waldner said. “We had
a lot of people putting in full
days on both of those events.
It’s a big time commitment,
and it’s de¿ nitely appreciat-
ed,” she said, noting that hav-
ing Howard as assistant coach
was great.
“I think it was bene¿ cial
to the kids, and we were able
to use time more ef¿ ciently,”
she said. She added, “Sign ups
will be in spring.”

They held a car show at
the Grant County Regional
Airport in 1995, then Grant
County Kruzers was formed,
and the ¿ rst of¿ cial Kruzers
car show was held in Prairie
City the following year.
“It looks great – they’re
still doing a great job,” Wolf
said. “The same people are
still putting in their time and
effort on it, and it’s as good as
it’s ever been.”
