Step up to health at Grant County fair
Booths will
touch on range
of health issues

JOHN DAY – The Grant
County Health Fair, coming
up on Friday, June 19, offers
a packed lineup of health and
wellness professionals, in ad-
dition to the tests that are the
main event.
The fair will be from 6 a.m.
to noon in the Grant Union Ju-
nior-Senior High School gym
in John Day.
People can register at the
fair, or they can sign up and
pay in advance at Blue Moun-
tain Hospital from 8 a.m. to
5 p.m. on Friday, June 12, or
Monday through Thursday,
June 15-18.
This year the regular blood
test costs $35, and the TSH
thyroid test can be added for
$15. The PSA test for men is
$20.
The Grant County Health
Department will offer A1c
testing for diabetes for $10,
tetanus shots for $20, and iron
and height/weight checks.
An array of booths will
offer information on topics
ranging from nutrition to skin
care to emergency services.
The fair is in its 21st year.
It started as a health and
safety event in 1994, with
the Malheur National Forest
partnering with Grant Coun-
ty Health Department, Blue
Mountain Hospital and local
law enforcement. The Hospi-
tal Auxiliary joined the team

of health checks and safety
information.
This year, Blue Mountain
Hospital’s new CEO, Randy
Mees, is expected to be on
hand, along with representa-
tives of various hospital de-
partments and the Strawber-
ry Wilderness Community
Clinic.

mile – will be represented, as
will two massage therapists,
Charles Osgood and Mary
Miles. A dermatology physi-
cian assistant, Larry Weber,
will check skin issues.
Popular presentations re-
turning to the fair include

vention, air ambulance ser-
vice, counseling, disaster
preparedness, gardening, di-
abetes, smoking, and preven-
tative information related to
heart, colon, breast, and bone
health. Safe Communities
Coalition is offering its “drug
take back” booth.
New booths this year will
provide information on cra-
nial sacral therapy, skin care,
HVVHQWLDO RLOV UHÀH[RORJ\
and pet care, as well as yoga
demonstrations.
The organizing commit-
tee is challenging people in
the community who can help
others to donate to a scholar-
ship fund to help people who
otherwise would be unable
to afford the blood tests. The
health department selects the
recipients.
Donations may be made
by June 16 at the hospital
registration site, with cash
or checks payable to Blue
Mountain Hospital Auxiliary.

Day announce the birth of their son,
Tanner John Dunn, at 11:19 a.m.
May 27 at Blue Mountain Hospital in
John Day. He was 19 inches long and
weighed 7 pounds.
He joins brothers, Taylor Thomas,
7-1/2, and Connor Dunn, 3-1/2.
Grandparents are Eddy and Carol
Dunn of Nampa, Idaho, and Robert and
Lori Ake of John Day. Great-grandpar-
ents are Karen Chadwick of John Day.

Frederick Orville Stoltz
Feb. 10, 1937 – May 28, 2015
Frederick Orville Stoltz, 78, died
May 28 at his John Day home. A Cel-
ebration of Life will be from noon-2
p.m. Saturday, June 13, at the John
Day Senior Center. Those attending
are encouraged to bring their favor-
ite side dish for the potluck.
Mr. Stoltz was born Feb. 10, 1937,
in Jeanette, Penn., to Orville Stoltz
and Madelyn Madyke. He graduat-
ed from McKeesport High School
in 1955, then entered the U.S. Navy.
He served for three years, and as a reserve for four years,
before being officially discharged in 1962.
On Sept. 6, 1987, he married Linda Sue Walker in New-
port. He spent most of his career as a postal service carrier,
and after 24 years, retired in June 2001.
He enjoyed golf, gardening, woodwork, fishing and
more golf. He was a member of the John Day Golf Club,
and active with the John Day Senior Center.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Stoltz of John Day;
son, Jeffery Stoltz of Payson, Ariz.; brother, Barry (Mona)
Stoltz of McKeesport, Penn.; and aunt, Ann Madyke of
John Day.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Bradley and Ste-
phen Stoltz.
Memorial contributions may be made to the John Day
Senior Center through Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241 S.
Canyon Blvd., John Day, OR 97845.
Inez Elizabeth Deming
May 20, 1922 – June 1, 2015
BEND – Inez Elizabeth Deming,
93, formerly of Grant County, died
June 1 at the Awbrey House in Bend.
Services are pending.
Mrs. Deming was born on May
20, 1922, in Polson, Mont., to Isaac
and Helen (Davis) Hedrick. She was
raised in Polson, and moved to the
John Day area shortly after her mar-
riage to James K. Deming in 1940.
They lived in many different places
in Oregon. After his death in 2001, she moved from Burns
to Bend.
She was a mother and wife first. She also worked at Ben-
son Shoe Store and Sprouse Reitz from time to time. She
enjoyed cooking, camping, fishing, and playing cards.
Survivors include her sister, Thelma Eng of Seattle;
daughters Sheron Fisher of Metaline Falls, Wash., and Inez
McKinney of Albany; sons, Larry Deming of Ione, Wash.,
and Jim Deming of Bend; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grand-
children; and one great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James; one
sister; and five brothers.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made
to Partners in Care Hospice of Bend, through Driskill Me-
morial Chapel, 241 S. Canyon Blvd. John Day, OR 97845.
MV Council reschedules

MT. Vernon – The Mt.
Vernon City Council resched-
uled this week’s meeting and
two hearings for 5:30 p.m.
Tuesday, June 23.
The session, originally set
for June 9, included a bud-
get hearing and an ordinance
hearing but had to be canceled
due to lack of a quorum.

Foundation and the Juniper Arts Council. Above, Bonnie Britton of the nonprofit Grant County Library
Foundation, which applied for the grant, and librarian Vicki Waters accept the $500 check, which is
buying more Legos for the library’s successful monthly Lego Nights for kids. The events have drawn
participants from across the county, with the turnout as high as 43 children. Organizers tout the Lego
projects for boosting children’s imagination, motor skills, language expression and narrative abilities
– and they’re fun. The nights are held on the first Thursday evening each month, except August and
December, at the library.
