Thomas J. Maple
July 17, 1944 – May 1ww4, 2015
HEALDSBURG, Calif. – Thomas J. Maple, 70, formerly of
Grant County, died in his sleep on May 14. No services are planned,
in keeping with his wishes. A gathering will be held at a later date.
Mr. Maple was born July 17, 1944, in Baker, the youngest of
¿YHFKLOGUHQ+HZDVUDLVHGLQ-RKQ'D\
In 1988, shortly after moving to Dry Creek Valley in Sono-
ma County, Calif., he became a grape farmer. He was smitten
ZLWKROG]LQIDQGHOJUDSHYLQHVWKHLUÀDYRUVVKDSHVDQGWHQDFLW\
that crowded their house. He bought the vineyard when it came
up for sale, and Maple Vineyards was born. He, with his wife
and farming partner, Christina (Tina), worked over the years to
PDNHWKHDFUHVÀRXULVK*UDSHJURZLQJEHFDPHWKHDEVROXWH
passion of his life for 26 harvest cycles.
He was also devoted to all the orphaned dogs who found
forever homes with them.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Tina; current dogs,
Shorty, Maggee and Roy; siblings, Joan, James, John and Mary;
and many nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are under the care of Fred Young Funeral
Home, 428 N. Cloverdale Blvd., Cloverdale, CA 95425.

S TUDENTS OF THE MONTH
A dozen women from Grant County took the Eagle on
vacation to Portland for a half-marathon on May 17.

The ‘Dayville Team,’ from left, April Driscoll (support
member), Daniel Driscoll II, Deanne Driscoll and Greg
Bliss, took the Eagle on vacation to the Cliff House
Restaurant in San Francisco, where they participated
in the Bay to Breakers 12K on May 17. The race,
which starts at San Francisco Bay and finishes at the
Pacific Ocean, runs through the city and the length of
Golden Gate Park.

in business, with a minor in
art. Croghan, who received
a JAC scholarship in 2014,
plans to pursue a career in de-
sign business. Her artwork is
also showcased on the recent-
ly updated JAC brochure.

LA GRANDE – Eastern Oregon University in La
Grande has announced academic honors for three lo-
cal students.
Kayla Barrietua, Hannah Brandsma and Michelle
Peterson, all of John Day, were named to EOU’s dean’s
list for the winter term 2015.

Alene Yates, 88, died May 21 at her Mt. Vernon home
with family by her side. A viewing will be from noon-7 p.m.
Wednesday, May 27, at Driskill Memorial Chapel. A funeral
service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 28, at Living Word

Paul Woodworth, 91, died May 24, surrounded by family,
at his Prairie City home. A funeral service will be at 10:30
a.m. Saturday, May 30, at Prairie Baptist Church, with the

Doris Loudermilk
Feb. 27, 1922 – May 24, 2015
Doris Loudermilk, 93, John Day, died May 24, at Val-
ley View Assisted Living Facility in John Day. A memori-
al service will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at Valley
View, 112 N.W. Valley View Dr.
Mrs. Loudermilk was born Feb. 27, 1922, in Santa
Rosa, Calif., to Thomas and Jennie Johnston. She attend-
ed high school in Ferndale, Calif., and beauty school in
Santa Rosa.
In 1953, she married Benny Loudermilk in Petrolia,
Calif. She spent her days doing ranch work, herding sheep
on horseback and working at the Petrolia store.
She was one of the Mattole Valley’s all-time great
horsewomen. She was an original “Rosie the Riveter,”
working as a woman welder during World War II. She was
an accomplished artist in pencil and pastel oils. She en-
joyed photography and loved working in the flower beds
with her husband.
She lived in Calgary, Alberta, Canada; and Anchorage,
Alaska, before retiring in Petrolia.
Survivors include her sons, Jim (Colleen) Clark of
Mt. Vernon, Jerry Clark of Reedsport and Joe (Karen)
Loudermilk of San Bruno; seven grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Benny
Loudermilk and Tom Clark.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Valley
