Humbolt Fun Run
• 1:45-2:05 p.m., Grant Union High School track, John
Day
Humbolt students will raise money through donations
that will go toward technology and playground improve-
ments at the school.
FRIDAY, MAY 22
Fair Queen coronation dinner
• 6 p.m., Grant County Fairgrounds, John Day
The coronation dinner honors 2015 Grant County Fair
and Rodeo Queen Reitta Wyllie. The evening includes a
spaghetti dinner, and both live and silent auctions. The
cost is $10 a person. Funds raised will help Queen Wyllie
represent Grant County as she travels to regional func-
tions. Other fair courts plan to attend, and all past and
present Grant County fair court members are invited. For

FRIDAY-SATURDAY, MAY 22-23
JOHN DAY – The Camp Cook-off, scheduled for May
30 at the Grant County Fairgrounds, has been canceled due
to lack of vendors.
Organizers hope to hold the event next year.
Proceeds benefit community service projects. The
church is located on South Fork Road.
TUESDAY, MAY 26
Skywarn Weather Spotter training
• 1 p.m., Grant County Regional Airport, John
Day
Volunteers are welcome to attend the free training,
offered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Ad-
ministration’s National Weather Service. Advance regis-
tration is not required. There will be light refreshments
and door prizes. The training is co-sponsored by Grant
County Emergency Management. For more information,

Drama Club presents mystery/comedy
Church yard sale

The Grant Union Junior-Senior High School Drama
• 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Dayville Community Church
Club presents “Murder Mystery at the Murder Mystery”
by Brian D. Taylor on stage in the old gym. The show is
a mystery/comedy, with action occurring on stage and in
the audience. The cost is $4 for adults and $2 for students.
Doors open at 6:40 p.m. The show is appropriate for all
ages and lasts about 75 minutes.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 27
Children’s mini film festival
• 3:45-4:45 p.m., Grantville Theater, Canyon City
Children ages 5 and older are welcome to a view-
ing sample of Drexel Foundation Film Festival films
made by and for other children – some as young as
5 – from 2006-2010. All the films are G-rated. Or-
ganizers hope the free showing will encourage local
children to enter the 2015 contest. For information

Baccalaureate

All are welcome to a baccalaureate honoring local

Senior Advisory Council to meet

The council will continue finalizing recommendations

ing for local fun this Memo-
rial Day weekend?
There will be activities
for the whole family at the
annual Cinnabar Moun-
tain Rendezvous this Fri-
day-Sunday in Mt. Vernon.
The fun kicks off at 6
p.m. Friday with a potluck
dinner, bingo and a beer
garden in the Mt. Vernon
Community Hall.
Saturday’s events in-
clude a parade at 11 a.m.,
with the lineup for partici-
pants at 10 a.m. at the com-
munity hall. This year’s
grand marshals are Lyle and
Linda McCumber.
The action moves over
to City Park that afternoon.
The schedule includes:
• After the parade: Horse-
shoe tournament.
• 12:30-3:30 p.m.: Teen
scavenger hunt.
• 1 p.m. – Ax throwing
for men and women.
• 2 p.m. – Frying pan
throw for women.
• 3 p.m. – Choker setting
for men.
• 4 p.m. – Bore and Buck
open class.
A $250 gift certificate
awaits the all-around timber
event winner.
Rounding out the day
will be a dance, with beer
garden, at 8 p.m. in the
community hall. There will
be live music by Daryl and
Mary of the group Just Us.
Sunday’s schedule in-
cludes duck races at 10 a.m.,
and “Kids Day” games at 11

SPRAY – Two long-stand-
ing events are coming up Me-
morial Day weekend in Spray:
the 68th annual Spray Rodeo
and the 51st annual Eastern
Oregon Half-Marathon.
The rodeo will be Satur-
day and Sunday, May 23-
24, although rodeo fans get
a preview Friday with slack
starting at 11 a.m. There’s no
admission Friday and conces-
sions will be available.
Here’s the schedule of
events for Saturday:
• Half-marathon: Starts at
8 a.m., a 13.2-mile run from
Service Creek to Spray. The
event is touted as the longest
running in Oregon.
• Buckaroo Breakfast:
From early morning to 11
a.m., in the Spray School caf-
eteria, prepared by members
of Spray High School athletic
programs.
• Parade: 11 a.m., starting
at the Spray General Store, led
by Queen Maggie Beck from
Corvallis. Grand marshals are
members of the Judy Alford
family.
• Rodeo: Begins at 1 p.m.
with the grand entry. Compet-
itors hail from all parts of the
Northwest. In addition to the
major rodeo events, there will
be a kids, women’s and men’s
1/4-mile race, and ranch bronc
riding.
Saturday is also “Tough
Enough to Wear Pink” day,
with all proceeds going to
St. Charles Medical Center
in Bend for breast cancer re-
search.
On Sunday, a cowboy
church service will be at 9

formance at 1 p.m., both at the
rodeo grandstands.
Stock this year will be pro-
vided by the 2014 stock con-
tractor of the year, B-Bar-D
Rodeos; the 2014 Announcer
of the Year, Scott Allen; and,

rel man JJ Harrison.
