New honor students inducted
Blue Mountain Eagle
JOHN DAY – Several
Grant Union students have
been added to the rolls of the
National Honor Society.
Six students were induct-
ed as new members, and four
as probationary members in
an April 22 ceremony in the
school’s old gym.
Dr. Ken Peterson was the
guest speaker at the event.
The new members are Tay-
lor McCluskey, Marta Faulk-
ner, Dawson Quinton, Avery
Lenz, Lucinda Harper and
Mariah Meyerholz. Those on
the probationary member list
are Rebecca Batease, Sam
Bentz, Hailey Carter and Jes-
sica Carter.

Susan Elizabeth Newstetter
July 21, 1954 – May 1, 2015
Susan Elizabeth Newstetter, 60, died May 1 at her Mt. Ver-
non home, with her husband and friends by her side. A memori-
al celebration will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Newstetter was born July 21, 1954, in Van Nuys, Calif.,
to Robert and Jean Newstetter.
Survivors include her husband, John La Liberte, and mother,
Jean Newstetter.
Memorial contributions may be made to the John Day Com-
munity Garden, Mt. Vernon Community Center, Grant County
Library Foundation, or the Professional Land Surveyors of Or-
egon Scholarship Fund.
Carolyn Trujillo
Carolyn Trujillo, 80, of Monument, died May 3 at Blue
Mountain Care Center in Prairie City. There will be no services
at this time.
Trujillo was a senior correspondent with the Blue Mountain
Eagle for many years.
Arrangements are under the care of Driskill Memorial Chap-
el, 241 S. Canyon Blvd., John Day, OR 97845.

Loreene Dee Bates
Nov. 23, 1934 – Jan. 17, 2015
Loreene Dee Bates, 80, of Prairie City died Jan. 17 in
John Day. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday,
May 2, at First Christian Church in John Day. A reception
will follow at the John Day Senior Center.
Mrs. Bates was born Nov. 23, 1934, in North Bend, to
Daniel Franson and Hannah Nay. She was the youngest of
10 children, and was a twin. After her graduation from Ban-
don High School in 1953, she and a sister moved to Prairie
City to live with another sister.
On Dec. 5, 1953, she married Delton Bates in Prairie
City.
She worked for a short time as a telephone operator,
and then at the drug store in Prairie City. Soon after, she
became a stay-at-home mother and wife. She took care of
their children, tended large gardens and sewed clothing.
She always provided a delicious meal every evening.
She enjoyed helping on the ranch, reading, watching
TV, gardening, sports, sewing, and spending time with her
family. She was caring and giving.
Survivors include her daughters, Glenna (Darrel) Stul-
tz of Union and Linda (Ken) Kowing of John Day; sons,
Scott Bates of John Day and Joe (Jordanne) Bates of Yaki-
ma, Wash.; sisters, Edna and Doreene; 14 grandchildren;
30 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchil-
dren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Delton
Bates; five brothers; and two sisters.
Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Mountain
Hospice through Driskill Memorial Chapel 241 S. Canyon
Blvd. John Day, OR 97845.
