Loreene Dee Bates
Nov. 23, 1934 – Jan. 17, 2015
Loreene Dee Bates, 80, of Prairie City died Jan. 17 in John
Day. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at
First Christian Church in John Day. A reception will follow at
the John Day Senior Center.
Mrs. Bates was born Nov. 23, 1934, in North Bend, to Daniel
Franson and Hannah Nay. She was the youngest of 10 children,
and was a twin. After her graduation from Bandon High School
in 1953, she and a sister moved to Prairie City to live with an-
other sister.
On Dec. 5, 1953, she married Delton Bates in Prairie City.
She worked for a short time as a telephone operator at the
drug store in Prairie City. Soon after, she became a stay-at-
home mother and wife. She took care of their children, tended
large gardens and sewed clothing. She always provided a deli-
cious meal every evening.
She enjoyed helping on the ranch, reading, watching TV,
gardening, sports, sewing, and spending time with her family.
She was caring and giving.
Survivors include her daughters, Glenna (Darrel) Stultz of
Union and Linda (Ken) Kowing of John Day; sons, Scott Bates
of John Day and Joe (Jordanne) Bates of Yakima, Wash.; sisters,
Edna and Doreene; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren;
and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Delton Bates;

Ersal ‘Gene’ Hickerson Jr.
Aug. 6, 1956 – April 21, 2015
Ersal “Gene” Hickerson Jr., 58,
died April 21 at his John Day home,
with his family by his side. At his
request, no services will be held. A
family gathering in his honor will
be held at a later date.
Mr. Hickerson was born Aug.
6, 1956, in Prairie City, to Er-
sal “Roy” and Norma Hickerson.
His early years were spent at the
family home in Mt. Vernon, un-
til they moved to John Day. He graduated from Grant
Union High School in 1974. After graduation he began
working in local sawmills: Edward Hines Lumber Com-
pany, John Day Lumber and Grant Western Lumber
Company.
He had many interests and was an avid reader from a
very young age. He also had a great love of music, and of-
ten entertained his family with his beautiful voice. He had
a strong interest in photography, was a dedicated fisher-
man, and often said his best days were spent fishing with
friends and family. He enjoyed time spent with his sisters,
nieces, nephews and many cousins.
Survivors include his sisters, Gayle (Bill) Fields of
Canyon City and Linda (Jerry Wayne) Pettyjohn of Sene-
ca; special cousin, Carolyn (Roger) North of Boise, Ida-
ho; nieces, Melinda Hammond and Jennifer Lindley; and
nephews, Ryan Pettyjohn and Mathew Fields.
He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew
L.J. Pettyjohn.

Marie F. Lyman
Nov. 13, 1921 – April 6, 2015
Marie F. Lyman, 93, died April 6, 2015, at Valley View As-
sisted Living in John Day. A service was held April 13 in Salem,

Mrs. Lyman was born Nov. 13, 1921, in Tomah, Wisc., to
Ray and Matilda (Winkleman) Bowers. She attended grade
school in Tomah.
She married Alvin Lyman on Oct. 9, 1939, in Wisconsin.
She worked as a homemaker. Her hobbies included reading,
cooking, baking and taking care of others.
Survivors include her son, Earl (Vicky) Lyman of Medford;
daughters, Carolyn Elliott of John Day and Marilyn Osborn of
Redmond; 11 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 16
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin; daughter,
Margie Schatz; brothers, Harold and Melvin Bowers; and sis-
ters, Marge Stevens and Betty Alsdorf.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Memory Care
center at Valley View in John Day.
Arrangements are under the care of City View Funeral Home
and Cemetery, 390 Hoyt Street South, Salem, OR 97302.

receive grants for iPads

JOHN DAY – Two Humbolt Ele-
mentary School teachers each received
a $600 grant from Figaro’s Pizza restau-
rant owner Pete Teague.
The grants were made available
through the company’s charitable pro-
gram called “HELP” (Helping Educa-
tion with Love & Pizza).
