the Grant County Futures
Scholarship program.
The program helps
adult and high school-
age students planning to
take courses or workshops
through Eastern Oregon
University of Blue Moun-
tain Community College’s
online programs.
The applications, avail-
able at the university’s
Grant County Center, are
due by 4 p.m. April 30.
Applicants must be
county residents for one
year, demonstrate finan-
cial need, provide letters
of recommendation, and
present a specific request.
The Grant County Futures
Scholarship program is in-
tended to provide a boost to
local workers and students,
and to get financial help to
those who can benefit most
– local degree-seeking stu-
dents, workers wanting to
increase job skills, resi-
dents who have never taken
a college course, or high
school age students who
want to get a head start on
college.
The advisory board is
accepting tax-deductible
donations for the endowed
Futures Scholarship.

winnings included a 2015 Jeep Patriot Sport, which he won by correctly
guessing the SUV’s price in the “Money Game.” The episode was filmed on

Douglas James Woodward
Born in Mitchell, Oregon 1-14-1927
Died at home, Richmond, Oregon 3-24-2015
Too young to serve in the military
in WWII, Douglas quit school and
joined the Merchant Marines and
served in the Pacific Theater
hauling military cargo to the
troops. After the war he moved to
the Roseburg area, and later to
Prineville, then settled outside
Redmond. During his career as a
logger he was an owner of P & W Trucking and
Woodward Logging Co. He finished his logging
career working for Boss and Peach Morgan. After he
retired from logging, he spent the last 25 years as
“Sheriff of Big Summit Prairie.”
Douglas loved to hunt and fish, and spend time on
Big Summit Prairie. He also loved gardening,
watching old Western movies and just sitting in the
sun.
He was preceded in death by his parents, “Toots”
and Helen, wife of 55 years Lavern, sons “Dougie” Jr.
and Eddy, brothers Van “Ben” and an infant brother,
and sisters Doris and Gloria.
He is survived by companion Barb Keener, children
Gail and Dennis, sisters Peaches and Sue,
grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-
grandchildren. Also Blue, his beloved cat.
He was loved by many and a friend to all, and will
be greatly missed.
Graveside service: West Branch Cemetery,
April 6, 2015 at 1:00pm.

Dean Chester Kile
April 18, 1933 – March 26, 2015
Dean Chester Kile, 81, of John Day,
died March 26 at Blue Mountain Hospi-
tal in John Day. A memorial service will
be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 15, at Redeem-
er Lutheran Church in John Day.
Mr. Kile was born April 18, 1933,
in Thorp, Wis., to John Kile and Elma
Butler. He attended Greenwood High
School.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army,
and after basic training at Ft. Leonard
Wood, Mo., he volunteered to go into the Airborne training camp
at Ft. Benning, Ga., After training, he transferred as a combat
medic in the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C., where he
completed his time with the Army.
On Sept. 1, 1956, he married Jeanette Rosenquist in Owen,
Wis.
He attended the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point,
Wenatchee Valley College, and graduated from Washington State
University in 1960.
He spent his career working as a logging systems and tim-
ber sale contract administration specialist. He retired on June 3,
1988, in John Day after 30 years with the U.S. Forest Service.
He and his wife lived in John Day throughout their retirement.

ing with friends and family, traveling to Wisconsin, and sight
seeing in North and South Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. He
served as president of the Grant County Food Bank, and worked
for Laborers for Christ on projects in many different places.
He was also a big fan of the Green Bay Packers and a stock-
holder in the franchise.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Kile of John Day; daugh-
ter, LuAnna Tirico of Bend; son, Douglas Kile of Burns; brother,
Les Kile of Wenatchee; sister, Alma Dietsche of Fond du Lac,
Wis.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Deborah Hall; four
brothers; one sister; and one grandson.
Arrangements are under the care of Driskill Memorial Chapel

Mamie Rosetta Collier
Dec. 17, 1929 – March 17, 2015
Mamie Rosetta Collier, 85, of Prairie City, died March
17 at Blue Mountain Hospital of John Day. Services were
private.
Mrs. Collier was born Dec. 17, 1929, in Arcadia, Mo., to
Thomas Clubb and Martha Haniple. She attended junior high
school in Arcadia.
On Jan. 17, 1948, in Fredericktown, Mo., she married
Richard Collier, with whom she had three children.
Her hobbies included sewing, weaving, reading and
watching Disney movies.
Survivors include her grandson, William “Bill” Ward of
Prairie City; granddaughters, Janice Ward, Amanda Hubbard
and Barbara Davis, all of Boise, Idaho; 11 great-grandchil-
dren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years,
Richard Collier, and all three of their children.
Arrangements were under the care of Driskill Memorial
Chapel, 241 S. Canyon Blvd., John Day, OR 97845.
Virginia Anna Sowa
ALBANY – Virginia Sowa, 71, formerly of John Day, died
March 24 in Albany. A graveside service was held March 28 in
