AIRPORT AND INDUSTRIAL PARK
It’s been called Grant County’s onramp – a state-of-the-art aviation facility
high on the mesa above the City of John Day
The joint-use Grant County Regional
Airport and U.S. Forest Service airbase was
completed in 2010. It was designed not only
for energy-efficiency, but also to complement
the colors and textures of the natural
environment. A third-story observation deck
allows visitors to enjoy expansive views of the
surrounding mountains while watching air
traffic come and go.
Conference rooms, with the latest technology,
have proven popular spots for local, state and
federal agencies to hold meetings. Private par-
ties, receptions and special events also may be
scheduled there, with kitchen facilities at the
ready for catering needs.
The airport serves both local pilots and visit-
ing travelers, offering Jet A and Avgas refueling,
private hangars and other amenities including
a convenient courtesy car. A pilot lounge offers
a cozy respite for visitors taking a break on
longer flights.

two runways, and a GPS instrument approach
system and automated weather system
(AWOS) offer pilots safe and convenient access.
Activity at the airport goes into high gear in
the summer, as the Forest Service uses its base
to train helitack firefighters and manage
firefighting operations.
The airport is adjacent to the John Day
Industrial Park, designated as an enterprise
zone, with incentives for business development
that creates jobs.
