Joe Toelle
Sept. 20, 1984 – Feb. 5, 2015
BURNS – Joe Toelle, 30, died of unknown natural causes Feb.
5 in Burns.
Mr. Toelle was born Sept. 20, 1984,
in Burns, to John and Connie Toelle. He
grew up in Harney County and loved to
spend time on his grandparents’ ranch
with his younger brother and cousins.
He helped build fences, move cows and
whatever else he could, to help his grand-
parents. He looked forward to brandings
and strived to be as good at roping as his
grandfather.
He enjoyed playing football in high
school, and watching college and professional games. He was a loyal
fan to Oregon State and the Kansas City Chiefs.
In 2000, he was chosen to play basketball in England with North-
west Basketball Camps, working several jobs to pay his way and
make it happen.
After his graduation with honors from Burns Union High School

reau of Land Management. He spent many summers working with

He attended Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls,
where he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical
engineering technology in spring 2009. He returned to Burns for one

nician at the BLM in Burns.
In spring 2004, he met the love of his life, Autumn Richardson,
at a wedding in Bend. After a long-distance romance over several
years, he proposed to her on Feb. 14, 2009, and they married in
Burns on Sept. 9, 2009.
They made their home outside Burns, where he often had at least
one project going on. He excelled at construction, woodworking,
roping, hunting, working on trucks and remodeling, often working
on projects with his wife. He made many improvements to their
house, turning it into the home of their dreams.
The couple had two sons, Cody Donald, born Feb. 17, 2012, and
Wade Allen, born Jan. 23, 2015. A devoted family man, Joe did little
else during the last two weeks of his life but love and show off his
family.
He enjoyed hunting and was planning a hunting trip to Alaska
with his friend Brian for summer 2015. He also looked forward to re-
building an old Chevrolet truck with his sons when they were older.
Survivors include his wife, Autumn; sons, Cody, 3, and Wade,
2 weeks; parents, Joe Toelle of Burns, and Connie and Jim Karns
of Chehalis, Wash.; brother, John Robert (J.R.); grandparents, Don
Toelle of Burns and Liz Moles of John Day; uncles and aunts, Dave
and Toni, Leigh, Carol, Bob, David and Donald; and numerous
cousins, extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Shirley Toelle, and
grandfathers, David and Raymond Moles.

Donna Mae Switzer
ST. HELENS – Donna Mae Switzer, 81, formerly of Grant
County, died Feb. 17 at Cherrywood Adult Foster Care in St.
Helens.
A memorial service will be held at St. Stephens Episcopal
Church in Baker City this summer.
Arrangements are under the care of Gray’s West & Compa-
ny, 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City, OR 97814.
Eola Cunningham
Feb. 5, 1928 – Feb. 11, 2015
Eola Cunningham, 87, of John Day, died Feb. 11 at Blue Moun-
tain Care Center in Prairie City. No services will be held at this time.
Mrs. Cunningham was born Feb. 5, 1928, in Gridley, Calif., to
William Henry Jones and Fern Todd.
She married Roy Cunningham in Reno, Nev.
She was a homemaker, who enjoyed crocheting, sewing and
reading. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Lat-
ter-day Saints in John Day.
Survivors include her sister, Dessie Graham of John Day; neph-
ew, Glen Graham of John Day; and nieces, Tina Bell of Coeur
d’Alene, Idaho, and Cathy Lynn of Oklahoma.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Cunningham.
Arrangements are under the care of Driskill Memorial Chapel,
241 S. Canyon Blvd., John Day, OR 97845.
Garrald Fred Downing
May 14, 1940 – Feb. 14, 2015
SMITH RIVER, Calif. – Garrald Fred Downing, 74, former-
ly of John Day, died Feb. 14 in Smith River, Calif. Services will
be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at Elks Lodge No. 1934, 800 Elk
Dr., in Brookings.
Mr. Downing was born May 14, 1940, in Caldwell, Idaho.
He graduated from Grant Union High School in 1960.
A 51-year resident of Del Norte County, he was a member of
the Elks Lodge, where he served as exalted ruler for two years,
and the Lions Club. He was an award-winning photographer,

His hobbies also included woodworking and building things.
Survivors include his children, Keith Fisher and Tammy
Downing Kelly; and six grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the care of Wier’s Mortuary Chapel,
408 G St., Crescent City, CA 95531.
James Dean Trost
July 4, 1950 – Feb. 4, 2015
POCATELLO, Idaho – James Dean Trost, 64, of Soda Springs,
Idaho, died Feb. 4 at Portneuf Medical
Center in Pocatello. Graveside services
were held Feb. 13 at Fairview Cemetery
in Soda Springs.
Mr. Trost was born July 4, 1950, in
Concordia, Kan., to Merton Ezra and
Dorthy Ellen Holton Trost. The family
moved to Greenleaf, Idaho, in 1952. He
attended grade school in Greenleaf, and
graduated from Vallivue High School in
Caldwell, Idaho, in 1968.
He moved to Park City, Utah, where
he worked in masonry. He later moved to Soda Springs.

Survivors include his daughter, Selena (Chysler) Weeks of
Grace, Idaho; grandson, Kegan Jon Michelson, of Grace; sis-

of Bend; brother, Rick (Patty) Trost of Unity, and their son, Andy
Vogt of Mt. Vernon; and many friends in the Hereford, Unity and
John Day areas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Norman.
