Tirico pleads not guilty
in misconduct case
Blue Mountain Eagle
CANYON CITY –
Former John Day Police
Chief Richard Tirico has
pleaded not guilty to two
counts of first-degree offi-
cial misconduct.
Tirico appeared last
Thursday in Grant County
Circuit Court.
The case could go to
trial as soon as March 10,
depending on the action
in another case already
on the court calendar. The
court set a backup date of
May 13, although defense
attorney J. Robert Moon
was not sure his schedule
would work for that day.
Attorneys told Judge
William D. Cramer Jr.
they expected the trial
would take one day. It will
be heard by a six-person
jury.
Assistant
Attorney
General Colin Benson is
handling the prosecution.
Both Benson and Moon
participated by teleconfer-

ence last week.
Official misconduct is a
Class A misdemeanor.
Tirico resigned as chief
in October 2013 without
explanation. He was in-
dicted last Sept. 29 by a
Grant County grand jury.
The indictment al-
leges he had two officers
in the department falsify
their time sheets, billing
overtime hours against a
drunken-driving enforce-
ment grant rather than the
city’s police budget.

A trap shoot and auction raised more than $2,400 last Saturday to help former
Mt. Vernon Mayor Sue Horn with medical expenses in her battle against cancer.
Organizer Julie Smith said about 50 people participated in the shoot, with many
others enjoying the day and contributing items for the auction. Horn also was on
hand, and ran the pull button for the shooters. “It was an incredible day,” said Smith.

Brawl ends in arrest at Canyon City station
Blue Mountain Eagle
CANYON CITY – A dispute
between two men flared up twice
in one day last week, ending with
one man in jail and some damage
in the Canyon City Shell Mini-
Mart.
Grant County Sheriff Glenn
Palmer said he responded about 10
a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, to a menac-
ing complaint in the first incident,
after one man reportedly went af-
ter another with a fireplace poker
at a Gardner Lane residence.
Rick Taylor was arrested and
conditionally released from jail,
with orders to stay away from the
residence and occupants Zechariah
Wilson and a female companion.
Palmer said about a half hour
later, Taylor was at the Shell sta-
tion when Wilson pulled up in
a vehicle, entered the building
to make a purchase and noticed
the other man. Wilson tried to
sidestep the other man, Palmer
said, but was cut off, and pre-
vented from going farther into
the store.
Palmer said Taylor allegedly
head-butted Wilson, and a brawl
ensued. The Sheriff’s Office, John
Day Police and Oregon State Po-
lice responded to the report of a
fight in progress.
An ambulance also was dis-
patched to the scene, but both men
refused transport.
Palmer said there was minor
