PRAIRIE CITY – Can you
believe this weather? How
many times has this happened
in Grant County? Watch out
for February and March, we
old-timers warn. Larry and
Carla are off to cruise the Ca-
ribbean area. It might be a lit-
tle warmer than here.
We are trying to help
Mother Nature remember this
is winter by putting out snow-
themed ceramic centerpieces
on the tables. We can always
dream.
The set-up crew laid eight
tables for dinner on Jan. 28,
and there were people at all
of them. We still have two
more we could put place set-
tings on, so there is still room
for you. The registration book
had 75 names.
Bu]] led the Àag salute,
and Darrell Johnson asked the
blessing. Our servers included
Sandi Rennels, Joann Phippen
and Lana Abarr. Donna Ad-
ams and Pam Howard helped
before and after the meal,
along with Del and Bonnie
Lake. Jim swept the Àoors af-
ter Joe washed down the table
covers.
January birthday people
included Helen Emmel, Glo-
ria Kulis, Ben Luethe, Betty
Retherford and Donna Ad-
ams. Gloria won the $10 in
trade from Huffman’s Mar-
ket, and newcomer Charlotte
Wright won the $5 in trade
from Prairie Hardware and
Gifts.
Our meal started with ap-
ple juice, moved on to fruit
salad, an entrée of sauerkraut
and German sausages, pota-
toes, rolls, and Milky Way
chocolate cake with vanilla
ice cream for dessert. Won’t
need much for supper.
The Blue Mountain Care
Center ladies, Lorna and Patty,
brought Dorothy Blasing, Lois
Hill, Floyd Morgan and Gerry
Pearl.
We made the long haul to
Bend on Jan. 26 for Derrol’s
examination by the surgeon
who replaced his shoulder
joint. Have to return every year
for three years and then every
two-three years after that. All
is well. But I found it odd this
is the ¿rst time he’s had to re-
turn for a check-up of this na-
ture. The surgeons who did his
ankles, wrists and back don’t
keep such close tabs on him.
Concluded that the ankles and
back are fused and not sup-
posed to move, but the shoul-
der has to, so they want to be
sure it’s moving correctly.
After that, we wanted to go
to Shari’s restaurant on High-
way 97 north for lunch. This
is the “mall” where the Sears
store just left. Guess who
moved in? Hobby Lobby. And
everyone in central Oregon
wanted to shop there. There
were no parking places in the
entire lot for hungry eaters. We
could see lots of seats inside
the restaurant, but no place to
park. We even observed peo-
ple coming out of Hobby Lob-
by with their purchases and
walking to their cars in Shari’s
parking area. So we gave up
that lost cause and traveled to
another establishment where
they had a special menu for
“experienced diners.” Smaller
portions and smaller price, too.
’Twas serendipitous, don’t ya
know.
Cor. 9: 23 “I do all things
for the sake of the gospel, so
that I may share in its bless-
ings along with you.”

MONUMENT – I think
I jinxed the weather when
I wrote about our sun-
ny and warm weather. It
seemed as if I was think-
ing of putting away my
summer clothes and then
it got very warm. Then,
when I commented how it
was so beautifully warm
and sunny, the weather got
quite cold. Yes, maybe I
control the weather – not!
Ha.
We had a bit of trouble
with our oven at the Jan.
27 lunch. It was acting up,
so our clever cooks impro-
vised on the menu. We had
spaghetti, garlic bread,
fresh salad, and Oreo pud-
ding.
We were blessed by our
cooks, Carrie Jewell and
Christy Howell, for their
quick thinking and dealing
with the situation. Marva
Walker and Bob Blakeslee
were our greeters. Bob led
the flag salute, and yours
truly the blessing over the
meal. Bob Cockrell won
the Chester’s Thriftway
gift card, Wally Walker
won the Len’s Drug gift
card and Judi Bustardo
won a free meal. We had
48 attendees and four
take-outs.
There was a surplus in
the food bank, so bags of
rice and pasta were avail-
able at the back table for
anyone who wanted to
take it home.
The Monument senior
bus is in dire need of driv-
ers. Marva Walker dislo-
cated her hip last week
while preparing the bus
for a medical trip to Bend.
She was incapacitated on
the ground for over four
hours in the cold because
no one could hear her calls
for help. This is her third
dislocation within a year.
She will continue to do the
scheduling and the book-
keeping.
Marva is asking for
four-five people to each
sign up a five-day week;
that would cover the needs
and that it would not be
such a huge commitment
and burden on any one
person.
The bus seldom runs
on weekends. Your com-
mitment would be one to
two trips. The riders are
asked to schedule trips as
soon as they have an ap-
pointment. This would al-
low some advance notice
for when drivers would be
needed. Would you please
give this some thought
and consideration on vol-
unteering to be a driver?
It would be much appreci-
ated and would be a great
help to your neighbors in
getting to their medical
appointments. Thanks!
We are already in the
month of February! I can-
not believe that we have
gone past one month of
the new year already. Oh
goodness, I better not
blink. I must not squander
my time. So many things
to do. Enjoy the day, en-
joy your loved ones, have
a blessed week everyone!
Numbers 6:24-25 “The
Lord bless thee, and keep
thee: The Lord make his
face shine upon thee,
and be gracious unto
thee …”
way certificate, and Don
Caldwell won the free meals
for two at Valley View.
Veanne again announced
about the AARP Driver’s
Safety Class on Feb. 7.
There is a sign-up sheet on
the wall at the Senior Cen-
ter, or contact Ron Dowse
at 541-575-4268. The cost
is $15.00 for AARP Mem-
bers and $20.00 for non
members. Those attending
should bring a lunch.
On Feb. 2, we had hash
for our meal. On Thursday,
Feb. 5, we will have pork
chops. That meal will be
sponsored by Tootie Cer-
nazanu, in memory of Jim
Cernazanu.
The John Day Senior
Center greatly appreciates
everyone who comes in for
lunch. We need for every-
one to be seated at the table
at ll:45am. That’s when the
cooks portion out the serv-
ing based on the number of
tables occupied. If we send
out food for seven tables
and then more people come
in, we have no food for that
table. Thank you for your
consideration.

JOHN DAY – On Jan. 26,
we had taco salad with all
the trimmings, with brown-
ies and rainbow sherbet for
dessert. Margaret Glass and
Susan Fowle greeted us at
the desk. The servers were
from the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Darlene Nodine led the flag
salute, and Mary Jane Allen
gave the blessing. Darlene
Nodine, Mary Jane Allen
and Veanne Weddle deliv-
ered 20 meals along with
eight frozen ones. Robert
Widell won the free meal,
and Mary Jane Allen won
the Len’s Drug certificate.
Veanne announced there
would be an AARP driver’s
safety class from 9 a.m.-
4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at
the John Day Senior Cen-
ter. People attending should
bring a lunch.
There is also bingo here
every Thursday after lunch.
We are still giving out some
door prizes that have been
donated by local merchants.
On Jan. 29, we had ham
and beans with corn bread
and coleslaw, and cake for
dessert.
Margaret Glass and Su-
san Fowle greeted us at the
desk. The entrée was spon-
sored by Buzz and Marga-
ret Glass. The servers were
from Cornerstone Christian
Fellowship. Sherry Nance
led the flag salute, and Carla
Anderson gave the blessing.
Margaret and Buzz Glass,
and Veanne Weddle deliv-
ered 24 meals. Karen Bailey
won the Chester’s Thrift-
