ball movement – they trust
each other,” said head coach
Jeff Schafer. “The defense is
very active. It’s a great feel-
ing. It sets us up for the end
of the season and lets us know
we can hang with anybody.”
Tiger player Hayden
Schafer said the team worked
together.
“We had really good atti-
tudes,” he said. “We worked
hard and rebounded.”

What I like best about my sport: “I love how dancing makes
me feel inside. We have an amazing coach who inspires us to
do better. The memories I’ve made with my team will last
forever.”
Coach’s Comment: “She is a beautiful performer and a
natural leader for our team. She’s head coach for the junior
high team, and is a great instructor as well.”

Grant Union Prospector Wyatt Weaver takes the ball
up to score against Imbler in the Jan. 31 game.
Grant Union, currently
fourth in the Wapiti league, will
host Union, which leads the
league, at 4 p.m. Saturday, be-
ginning with the girls game.
Speth said the Pros would
love to see even more support
from the crowd at that key game.
“A win would keep us in the
hunt for moving up to a second-
or third-place seeding at our dis-
trict tournament,” he said.

PRAIRIE CITY – The
Prairie City boys and girls
teams experienced loss-
es at home last week,
both teams hampered by
injury.
Although the Lady Pan-
thers played tough defense,
they came up short to fin-
ish 47-55 against a strong
Jordan Valley team last
Friday.
Panther head coach Pen-
ny Black said the entire
Mustang team “is quick and
has developed their outside
shooting.”
She said the Panthers
tried to keep the driving
lanes shut down on Andi
Warn – one of the Mustangs
who likes to get the inside
score.
Black said her team
played just as tough as they
did when they faced Jordan
Valley earlier in the season
and lost 43-56.

The Pros’ game plan from
there, he said, was to “slow
VanCleave down, focus on
making others take tough shots,
and rebound their misses.”
Grant Union’s 6-foot-3
player Nathan Gehley was out
for much of the second half due
a cut on his arm.
Coach Speth said Wade
Reimers and Trace Gill did a
“great job slowing VanCleave
down and outrebounding Im-
bler in the second half, despite
not having our biggest player
available for most the second
half.”
With six minutes left in the
game, the Pros were down by
5 points, but worked their way
back up.
At the 27-second mark,
Prospector Mitch Moulton
was fouled while attempting a
3-point shot. He sank three at
the free-throw line to put Grant
Union up 58-55.
“Trace Gill made a great de-
fensive hustle play, diving on the
ÀRRUIRUDORRVHEDOOWRJLYHXV
the ball at the end with almost no
time left,” Speth said.
He said the team showed im-
provement offensively, taking
better shots.
“We were able to make key
plays down the stretch to clinch
the victory, something we had
previously struggled with in
close games this season,” he
said.
The team toppled Cove 59-
38 the previous night in league
play and lost a Jan. 28 nonleague
game to Crane, 60-61.
“With Amy Black lead-
ing the charge, I felt that
this was our best game
this season,” coach Black
said. “We distributed the
ball well, played aggres-
sive defense and rebounded
well.”
She
said
Brianna
Zweygardt also gave an
aggressive performance at
post.
“She’s coming along
well for only being a
freshman – we’ve gone up
against some of the stron-
gest teams in the state and
she competes,” the coach
said.
Amy Black led the scor-
ing with 20 points, fol-
lowed by Zweygardt with
19.
“I was proud of all the
girls – we came back to
within 3 points after being
down by 18 points,” she
said. “We never gave up.”
The Lady Panthers fell
to the Adrian Antelopes,
25-41, on Saturday.
“Our confidence went
away for this one,” Black
said. “We let the full-
court pressure affect us
way more than we should
have.”
She said the team will
regroup and “forge on” as
they prepare to face Adrian
this Friday.
PC boys stand tough
in loss
While the Prairie City
boys fell to Jordan Valley,
41-59, their coach lauded
the team for 100 percent
effort.
“It was one of our best
games so far this sea-
son,” said head coach
Mark Woodbury. “They
played a more complete
game.”
Leading the scoring,
Wyatt Williams had 18
points, including a 3-point-
er shot nearly from half
court at the first-quarter
buzzer.
The Panthers trailed
19-28 at halftime and end-
ed the third quarter 28-
42.
“Wyatt Williams had
a breakout game – it was
good for him,” Woodbury
said.
He added the team is
gaining in confidence.
“It
was
fun
to
watch,” he said. “The
hard work is coming to
fruition.”
The Panthers lost to
Adrian last Saturday, 27-
45.
Prairie City started off
strong, but running just six
players to Adrian’s deep
bench, which includes 12
varsity players, was tough,
Woodbury said.
“We’re trying to push
them to work hard and ex-
pect them to be able to com-
pete,” he said.
Prairie City hit the road
Tuesday to face Crane, past
press time.
The Panthers travel
to face Adrian at 6 p.m.
