grange hall carpet has
been installed! The color
is blue/gray, so it goes
with everything, right?
And the men got the
Rose Coombs
organ back up on the
stage, so we’re
ready for future events.
Thanks again to all who had a part in this project, especially Joe and
Jim for building it, and Bruce for hauling off the debris. Everyone
agreed it looks nice and the carpet layer did a good job. Wonder what
the next project will be?
Buzz led the flag salute, and Darrell Johnson asked the blessing. Our
servers included Sandi Rennels, Pam Howard, Lorna Askew and
Donna Adams, and Del Lake even helped serve the daily products. He
and Bonnie helped with the clean-up along with Joe and Jim and
several others. Nancy Viggers got to count money again, too. We had
64 names on the registration book.
Lois Bidasolo won the Chuck’s Little Diner gift certificate, and
Derrol Coombs won the $5 in trade from Prairie Hardware & Gifts.
Wednesday, Jan. 28, will be January birthday appreciation day.
The Blue Mountain Care Center ladies, Lorna and Patty, brought
Dorothy Blasing, Darrell Pierce, Gerry Pearl and Robert Riddell –
first time for Gerry and Robert.

We dined on grape juice, green salad, spaghetti and meat sauce,
cottage cheese, rolls, and Mississippi Mud cake for dessert. Oh, yeah,
we dined; we serve dinners, not lunch. There was space for you, too.
Well, son #2 is about to become a homeowner. They got tired of
renting and moving and renting and moving – 13 times in 13 years.
Joel said when Bert and Agata bought their house in Oregon City, he
finally understood why it was good to buy – because the owners can’t
kick you out! If all goes forward as it looks like it will, by this time
next month they will move for the 14th and last time – at least for a
while, they hope. The property has a swimming pool that hasn’t been
kept up for some time. He hopes to get it drained and use it as a
skateboard bowl. Of course – what else would Joel do with a
swimming pool? For those who don’t know, Joel was one of the first
skateboarders in Grant County. Now he is on staff at Skatechurch in
Portland.
We mourn the loss of three area residents this past weekend:
schoolmate Blaine Kendall, former mayor Gary Waterhouse, and
long-time resident Loreene Bates. Our condolences to all the families.
My family lived next door, or next farm, to Blaine’s aunt and uncle in
Idaho in the 50s. And Loreene’s sister-in-law married a Coombs.
Connections are interesting, aren’t they?
I see in the Eagle the courthouse is going to get a “holeless hydraulic
elevator and shaft.” I’m curious about the term “holeless.” How can
you have a holeless shaft? Ah, ’tis a mystery.

also bingo every Thursday after lunch.

and Gloria Kulis greeted us at the desk. The entrée was sponsored
by Tootie Cernazanu in memory of Jim Cernazanu. The servers
were from St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. Walt Hall led the flag
salute, and Jim Maple gave the blessing. David Turner, Jim

Veanne announced there is a sign-up sheet on the wall at the
Senior Center for the AARP Driver’s Safety Class on Feb. 7, or
contact Ron Dowse at 541-575-4268. People attending should
bring a lunch.
The Monday, Jan. 26, meal was taco salad. On Thursday, Jan. 29,
we will have ham and beans with corn bread, sponsored by Buzz
and Margaret Glass.
The John Day Senior Center greatly appreciates everyone who
comes in for lunch. We need everyone to be seated at tables at
11:50 a.m. That is when the cooks portion out the serving based
on the number of tables occupied. If we send out food for seven
tables and then more people come in, we have no food for that
table. Thank you for your consideration.
