PRAIRIE CITY – The Lady Pan-
thers were on top of their game last
weekend, claiming victories at home
and on the road.
Prairie City head coach Penny
Black was pleased with her team’s
hustle at home when the Panthers
toppled the Joseph Eagles 55-35 and
in Powder Valley, where the team
squeaked past the Badgers 32-30 in
overtime action.
“We worked very intensively at
bettering our defense throughout
the (Christmas) break, and it really
showed up in our games this week-
end,” she said. “Our overall effort
was really amped up and the girls

AYVILLE – Hard work and discipline.
That’s what’s driving the seven-member Dayville/Mon-
ument boys basketball team, said head coach Jeff Schafer.
The team got off to a successful start this season with
WKUHHVWUDLJKWZLQVWKH¿UVWJDPHSOD\HGZLWKRQO\¿YHWHDP
members.
Dakota Emerson, recently back on the court after recovering from a football
injury, is adding depth to the team, the coach said.
While the Tigers have just one 6-foot player, Sage Flower, Schafer says the
team works well together defensively.
“They really communicate well – they play as a team,”
2014-15
he said.
Those qualities should help the team as they face tough S ENIOR
High Desert League foes, including: Prairie City, Adrian,
Crane, Jordan Valley, Harper/Huntington, Long Creek/Ukiah
and Burnt River.
“It’s a good league,” Schafer said. “You can never take
anyone for granted.”
On their list of things to keep working on: defense, ball
movement and movement off the ball as they move forward
with the season.
Sage
Schafer, who works with assistant coach Taylor Schmade-

ka, said the goal this season is for continual improvement.
We want to “never be content where we are and strive to
keep getting better,” Schafer said.
The sole senior, Sage Flower, said his teammates are excited for the sea-
son.
“They all work really hard – it’s more like a family,” he said. “I think we
have a chance to go somewhere this year, and we’ll keep working hard and see
what happens.”
“Sage has improved tremendously over the last few weeks and is a great
team leader,” Schafer said.
“They are working exceptionally hard this year,” he added. “I’m proud of
all of them. They are great kids to coach. I feel privileged to coach them.”
The Tigers boys, 7-4 on the season, begin league play in Dayville at 7:30
p.m. this Friday, facing Harper/Huntington.

At halftime, Grant Union
had a 23-15 lead, and then kept
Cove to 8 points for the rest of
the game. The Pros gave up only
2 points in the third quarter.
“Great team defense in the
second half proved to be the
deciding factor in this game,”
said head coach Mark Mosley.
“We adjusted at halftime and
used more ball pressure to cre-
