C. Caldwell, of Kan sas, for President in 1896 Topeka is the Btronghold of labor unions in the West, and organizations are recognized as a powerful element in state politic«. The recent decision of Caidwell in the Union Pacific case has started a strong movement among the laboring class, and the Republicans are not slow to see their chance. A prominent Repuh- lican, who has held high Federal positions, says to night: “There is no stronger man to day with the masses than Judge Cald well.
