Letters and papers lately received
from South America contains inter­
esting facts concerning the troubles
in Chili. There seems to be a prob­
ability of the immediate ending of
the war. Balmaceda’s arntv is
said to consist, at present, of 30.000
men. The Chilian soldiers are be-
ing driven into foreign territory.

A Demersville, in the Flathead
country, Montana, a gambler known
as Jurgen alias Perry, alias sever­
al other names, wantonly killed a
rancher named Burns, when the
latter had his back turned, it is
conceded that the gambler was hired
to kill anothe” man and made a
mistake in his victim. At prelim­
inary examination he was released
in the face of overwhelming evi­
dence. He was taken from the of­
ficers, carried three miles into the
coutry. and hanged by the enraged
people, and the justice who releas­
ed him was given twenty-four hours
to leave town

At Paris the police have arrest­
ed a man named Meueniot for
murder and other crimes. Meue­
niot. who is an ex-olficer of customs
and a widower with two sons,
courted a wealty girl named Jaetel
who rejected him because he was
poor. Meueniot then engaged in a
number of robberies, and finally
murdered an old priest and his
servant. Having got some money,
be renewed his suit, but the girl
objected to the children. Meueniot
thereupon stt fire to the girl's resi­
dence, the occupants of which had
a narrow escape. Meuenion had
not been detected in any of these
crimes. After another interview
W’th the girl, who then seemed to
be willing to marry him. he smoth­
ered his eldest bov and finally shot
and seriously injured the girl’s
brother, who had forbidden the
proposed marriage. When arrest­
ed Meueniot confessed to all but
the double murder.—Ex.
