P. F.
HARPER’S BAZAR,
HAHSF.Y VALLEY I’Alll COLI MX.
Believing that the beet way to
effectively advertise any section cf
country is to keep its value, agri
cultural, ootuinereial, mineral, graz
ing, etc., continually before the pub
lic, wc again proceed to build up
this column for 1889, as we did for
1888.
We carried the Harney valley
advertisement from May, 1888, to
May, 1889, one year, and run off
an extra quire each week for mail- i
ing in response to letters of inquiry,
Jo sell to public-spirited citizens,
and supply immigrants on the road.
There is not now in the office ten
of these copies. Readers can see
from this statement the importance
of getting up a column of new mat-;
ter for another year's advertising.
As T he H erald gives no hearsay
evidence, but gives occular proof of I
all it asserts, when asked for it,
Gardeners tire requested to bling
in samples of any kind <>f vegeta
bles grown by them; Farmers to
fetch in samples of grain, grass, or
any kind of product that will ex
hibit the worth of the soil, climate,
and general ability of the Harney
country to support an agricultural
population; Stockmen to show any
young stock bred and raised in the
valley. A record of each will be
made, and all but perishable arti
cles preserved for direct reference.
Herald Grounds—We can report
that the catalpas, poplars, Balm cf
Gileads, set out the spring of 1888,
the locusts raised from seeds plant
ed spring of 1888, lived through
the winter, and are in thrifty grow
ing condition—these are irrigated
throughout the summer only.
Lettuce seed sown in December,
came up in April. Lut not being
irrigated went tosecdii g early.
Beas planted April 2d, gave a
7-lb. miss June 18th, notwithstand
ing the drouth of the past five weeks
and not having any irrigation what
ever.
Timothy.—S. J. Mothcrshead
gent in three samples of the growth
of this seed on his ranch and it is
in a most ilourishmg condition at
this writing.
Roses.—Mrs. Haskell has a moss
rose bush with perfect llowering
this summer.
