- nasal voices , catarrh and FALSE TEETH." A prominent English woman say. the American women all have high Bhrill, naa. 1 voices and false teeth. Americans don't like the constant witling they get about this nasal twang, and yet it is a fact caused by our dry stimulating atmosphere, and the universal presence of catanha) difficulties. But why should so many of our women have false tieth? That is more of a poser to the Eng lish It is quite impossible to account for it except on the theory of deranged stomach action caused by imprudence in eating and by want of regular ex ercise. Both conditions are unnatural. Catarrhal trouble everywhere pre vail and end in cough and consump tion, which are promoted, by rnal-uu- trition induced by deranged stomach action. The condition is a modern one, one unknown to our ancestors who prevented the catarrh, cold, cough and consumption by abundant and regular use of what is now known as Warner’s Log Cabin Cough and Consumption Remedy and Log Cabin b raaparilla, two old fashioned stall- dai I remedies handed down from our ance. <ors, and now exclusively put forth under the strongest guarantees of purity and efficacy by the world- famed ma'-'-r. of Warner’s safe cure. These two rc.nedii s plentifully used as the spring and summer seasons ad vance give a positive assurance of freedom, faith from catarrh and those dreadful and if neglected, inevitable consequences, pneumonia, lung troubles and consumption, which so generally and fatally prevail among our people. Comrade Eli Fisher, of Salem, Henry Co., Iowa, served four yearB in the late war and contracted a disease called consumption by the doctors. He had frequent hemorrhages. After using Warner’s Log Cabin Cough and Consumption Remedy, he says, un der date of January 19lh, 1888 : “I do not bleed ai the lungs any more, my cough does not bother me, and I do not have any more smothering spells.” Warner’s Log Cabin Rose Cream cured his wife of catarrh and she is *‘8ound and well.” Of course we do not like to have our women called nose talkers and false teeth owners, but these eon di tions can be readily overcome in the manner indicated. OF GENERAL INTEREST. —A huge black fish over thirty-five feet in length was seen in the waters of the bay near Whatcom, W. T., re cently. —Mr. Ruskin says the English have ceased to be English. Some of the American dudes are trying hard to till their places. —One thousand pairs of three-dollar opera glasses offered for sale in New York City were found to have cost just seventeen cents a pair. —An organization of all the Mormon poets in Utah is in process of formation at Salt Lake City. It is projected “to encourage the poetic talent that exists among Zion’s people.” —The registration in Philadelphia generally largely exceeds chat of New York, although at t4ie last Presidential election New York polled 230,000 votes to Philadelphia’s 175,000. —Mrs. Mart Holcomber, of Brady Island, Neb., cleaned out a den of snakes on her farm recently, killing forty of the reptiles. The only weapon «he used was a stout club. —A Denver man has a collection of ■over seven hundred pens, no two alike. Some are shovel-shaped, others look like a miniature stove-pipe and others are delicate and diminutive. The Bank of New York has a check yellowed by fire which was drawn by Aaron Burr August 14, 1784, and also another check drawn by Talleyrand and Gulian Verplanck. It is nearly one hundred and four years since the bank was established. —Every mafi when he takes up his cards at a game of whist holds one out of 635,013,559,600 possible hands. As for the total number of variations pos sible among all the players, it is so enormous as almost to exceed belief. It has been calculated that if a million of men were to be engaged dealing cards at the rate of one deal each minute, day and night, for 100,000,000 of years, they would not then have ex hausted all the possible variations of the cards, but only one-hundred thou sandth part of them. —An old Lake Superior sea captain says that nothing is ever done when a man falls overboard on that body of water. The reason, he alleges, is that the water of the lake is so cold that a man can not live in it during the time it takes to stop a rapidly moving vessel and lower a boat In twenty years he never knew but one man wkn fell ■overboard who escaped death. Others •were apparently killed by the shock produced by falling into such cold water. It is said, too, that the lake never gives up its dead, and sailor« aver that no corpse was ever seen floating on the lake. A Fortunate Druggist. Mr. Edwin W. Joy for many years and now a pros perous druggist on ths corner of Stockton and Market streets in San Francisco, probably neier dreamed of rivaling in wealth the medicine kings of the country. But various rumors having been floating around to the effect that he has struck it big, an Examiner reporter was detailed to unearth the cause, and after much difficult) unraveled the folio* ing story: it seems that about seven vean ago an English physician, a great student of botany, l<>«ated for a brief season in thia city. His practice was not ex tensive, and yet the few cases of a general nature that came to him attracted ro littie attention. His greatest success seemed to be in the treatment of liver and kidney disorders, and vitiated Wood. In fact his ability to cope with these <->qin.on com plaints was little short of the maneloos. He seemed aLnost infallible, and his quiet, nxxlest n»etho«toand his well kept «wvet was asmu<-h a mystery as bim- se t \fter his departure about ayear later Mr. Joy determined to fathom the se- ret, and e pying all the prescriptions he had filled for the erratic doctor, he began a systematic analy sift In h’s examination he discovered running all through the prescript io a for liver and kidney troubles, xitiated Wood and stomach disorders a couple of vegetaUe extracts indigenous to California, «o sim-ls and so well known under homely every day names to every school boy as to entirely dissipate the suspicion that they were the active prin Ii»tes involved. RISING FROM When I whs in the army during th« winter of 1862 we were camped at tins upper end of Metairie ridge, some few miles back of Carrollton, La., and some seven or eight from New Orleans. Toward Lake Pontchartrain there was an almost impassable cypress swamp and on the river side wet sloughs. The ridge was from a quarter to a half a mile in width and thickly settled. For what purpose we had been camped there we never knew, unless to try our constitutions in the very hot-bed oi malarial production. The men were giving way very fast, so that it was impossible to make out a picket detail without taking men on the sick list. Just where our regiment was camped the ridge was divided by a bayou, and back of us, across this bayou, was camped probably a thousand contra bands. The blacks were suffering from fevers and other sickness ami dying off very fast, although they were thoroughly acclimated under ordinary circumstances. Our picket line was sta tioned just back of the contraband camp in the edge of the swamp, but what was expected to coine through this morass, except alligators and other indigenous animals, is more than we ever found out. Near the post oc cupying the northwest corner the con trabands buried their dead with all the solemnity and superstition of the African nature. From comrades who had been stationed on this post we had been told of strange occurrences that, in spite of the solemnity such things usually inspire, would convulse us with laughter. One day after lie was relieved, Joe C. S----- told us of an incident that often recurs to me. The ground, as every one knows, on the Mississippi bottoms of Louisiana, is very low, and at any time in a hole dug the water will come very near the surface. It was so with the graves dug by the con trabands; they would immediately fill with water to within a few inches of the top, which made it necessary to put weights on the dead bodies ill order to sink them so they could I m covered. There was no such thing to be had as coffins, and the burials were made in blankets. Just before night Joe saw a contra band funeral approaching his post and through curiosity stopped to watch the proceedings. The corpse was laid in i he grave and as it would not sink heavy sods taken from the surface were placed on both head and feet While the body was slowly sinking the venerable white-haired preaclu# was exhorting the attendants and com mitting the body, “Dust to dust.” Just as they commenced throwing in dirt, up darted the dead body, head first, half way out of the grave, and the last one of them ran away yelling. Joe burst out laughing, as he saw that the weight that had been placed on the head of the body had slipped ofl and, of course, the buoyancy of the water quickly forced the corpse into an upright position. It was some time liefore the negroes could be influenced to return and complete their burial. They believed there was something supernatural about it, and no amount of talking could convince them to the contrary. — Wilber H. Webber, in N. K Graphic. Pipes Again in Fashion. “Pipe-smoking is on the increase.” ■aid a Fulton street tobacconist. “Years ago it was not unusual to meet a half-dozen men pulling on brier roots during a walk of as many blocks, but until recently the custom has been regarded as vulgar, and Patsey with his dudheen was the only man who braved popular prejudice and saun tered home with a pipe in his mouth. During the past few months it is sur prising how many pipes have beeiT •»old. Nearly all the old stock is gone, and the manufacturers are smiling at the pro-pect of a rush for the holidays. The protits are not meager, but oi course they are nothing to those we make on cigars. The male portion ol New York begins smoking nowadays at the age of seven years, and never quits until death. Cigarettes, or “coffin nails,” as some perso is call them, are liought by every one. Even young women, school-girls and old women blow a cloud occasionally. We should all get rich if there were fower in the business. The man who doesn’t smoke something nowadays is a rarity.”— N. Y. Mail and Express. AN INDIAN ORATOR. Which Recalls That of th« Famous Chief Logan. The Cœur d’ Alen» Indians aro said to be the best behaved in our Territor ies. The Indian Commissioners who visited them to treat for a part of their reservation for the Spokanes, say they have luriong them a high degree of civ ilization. Their chief. Seltice, made a speech which recalls that of the Indian chief. Logan, once so common in the school books of the country. He said: We understand that the paper which we signed ¡3 to go to Washington to be seen by the President and the Great Council. I know your hearts with re gard to it, and they are good. How ever you fix it, it will be right; but I plead with you, I implore you, I call on the Great Father, who will hear me, preserve for us and our children for ever this reservation, where are our schools, our churches, our homes, our graves, our hearts. The Government has now thought of our olaims for our lost land, and they have sent you to us. Of this we are glad, but neither money nor land outside do we value compared with this reservation. Make the paper strong; make it so strong that we and all Indians living on it shall have it for ever. We also wish you to make our school» and our churches so strong that »*>•> will be here forever for our chil dren, when we have passed away from the wwrld and gone to the Great Father above.— Chicago Times. —~---- —There is a firm io Berlin that em ploys two hundred girls who manufact ure little bundles of antisepticdressing material, with which all German sol diers are to be supplied in future, so that they may be able to dress their own wounds in the absence of a surgeon. X Y. Ledger. GRAVE. Aa Incident Which Relieved the Monot ony of Camp Life. Tu Mv attention has been called by some thing I have seen in the papers to the cool, shady climate enjoyed by the Sfste of Minnesota during several months of tho year. I spent the early part of my life in the State, and listened many thousand times to the statement con cerning the dry air. Perhaps my earliest remembrance is of tlm doctor standing over the cradle and looking down at me. “Of course,” said the physician, “he is squint-eyed and red-heade^ in the extreme, but our fine, dry atmos phere will bring him out all right” The people of Minnesota have never, as a class, lost their enthusiasm on the subject of the dry air and the impossi bility of feeling the cold. Somo indi viduals have, of course, lost some of their ardor, but the people as a whole remain true. I refer above particularly to a man I once saw get up in a public meeting to speak in eulogistic terms of the dry air. He had just opened his mouth to begin, when a long, gvaj’ streak of it happened to co.ne in the kej’-hole and freeze his mouth open, so that it was nocessary to put his head in the oven to thaw it out. This booming the dry air is discourag ing work, but still the hardy Minnesota pioneer, keep on. Nothing daunts them. A member of tho Legislature rises In his place to introduce a bill de claring Minnesota a winter resort, only to find his teeth frozen together. But tho bill is eagerly seized by the nearest member and passod, and becomes a law. They know no such word as fail. The •rugged Minnesota editor sits in his office, and while tho dry air whistles around tho corner and blows th« old pair of pantaloons out of tho broken window-pane, he writes an article on "Cool, Dry. Minnesota Weather versus Southern Rain and Slush.” There, amid the roar of the crisp, dry blizzard, surrounded by the howl of the business manager for more coal on the fire, hemmed in by the harsh rasping of the surgeon's saw as he amputates the frost-bitten right leg of the city edi tor—there, I repeat, with an ice palace to the right of him and a toboggan slide to the left of him, and amid the squeak ing of the mercury in the thermonioter as it sinks to still lower depths, sits the vigorous Minnesota editor writing an I editorial on “Frost and Health, as Op posed to Malaria and Death.” Several years ago a man by the namo of Johnson came out to Minnesota. He had never had any experience with blizzards, but the people all assured him if he was evercauglit out in such a i storm ho wanted to hang on to a tree if he could Undone. There were so many trees growing up in the country now, they said that the storms had lost much of their force. They told him anybody could find his way in a storm if he could only get to some trees. Shortly afterwards, while a large bluish-gray blizzard was tearing about the country, this man had occasion to go to a neighbor's place a mile or so distant With a calm, childlike faith which it was beautiful to see Mr. Johnson cut down a couple of small fruit trees, took them under his arm, and walked out into the unknown, trackless storm. After he had wandered three days and three nightslie ran onto an agent for a nursery frozen stiff and with over a hundred trees in his wagon. Then Mr. Johnson lost faith in trees and lay down beside the agent— F. H. Carruth, in Chicago Tribune. A Speech THE He Muzzled the Dog. Marion H.rtrantt, a New York irirL who I.
