In conversation with a practical
stockman of the southern part of this
county one day last week the writer
was convinced that the embargo on
small range mares was an error up
on tho part of tho government and
that It should be raised. The stock
man stated that this sized animal
was not good for breeding purposes
under present conditions, or In fact
ever would be In the future as horse
men know they must raise the draft
animal now to make a success of the
business. These mares are a size
that will sell readily for war pur
poses according to our informant,
and are simply multiplying now and
denuding the range. They have no
place In the order of things these
tluys ii ml the government should en
courage ihclr sale ami ll:ui relieve
the overcrowded range. It doesn't
take any more feed for u uticful ani
mal than for u "fustail" according to
authority and why not give the better
breed the advantage by getting rid
or the little animals when there Is a
demand for them.
o
Just a few questions for the man
whose "conscience" will not permit
him to fight: Suppose Jesus Christ
had been walking In It 'gium when
the Hun army broke across the bord
er, and had seen soldiers plunge
their bayonets through Innocent
children; had seen women and
young girls treated as only beasts
are capable or treating them; had
seen the aged and Infirm shot down
without mercy and without provoca
tion; had seen soldiers captured in
what they supposed to be honorable
warfare, crucified by their captors;
had seen aviators deliberately search
out hospitals and nurses' quarters
for bombarding had he Heen all
this, would b)S have stood by unmov
ed and rerused to lilt his hand to
right those dastardly wrongs? H that
is your conception or Christ, you are
right in your refusal to fight, for Ii
he were what you picture him he
would be as poor a specimen or hu
manity as yourseir and you are the
limit.
The hog is the most patriotic citi
zen among us. No matter how much
or how little he is worth, he keeps
right on looting ror us.
o
Henry Ford is reported to have
designed a machine ror use against
the IMIoat. Some time ago he de
signed a machine that has overcome
almost every thing else but a U
Hoai. and why not that?
o
Chancellor Von Hertllng says that
Germany must be thoroughly whip

terms on which a just and lusting
peace can be secured. For once the
Chancellor is thoroughly In accord
with his foes.

Conservative citizens everywhere
will deplore the attempt on the part
of some of our misguided statesmen
to reopen the party rights that huve
been the custom lu years pust. No
thing at this time could be worse ror
the country than a bitter
fight throughout the land. Every In
terest or the country bemautls unity
or sentiment ami action.
Republican politicians could not
hope ror advantage except at the ex
pense or great harm to their coun
try, ami such action on the part of
ill icruts could be nothing but sui
cidal. Doubtless there have been mis
takes made anil blunders committed
what ad in I n 1st rat ion has been free
from them? Hut these mistakes have
not been such as to call for a politi
cal upheaval. We are not ready
to admit to our enemy that our lcud-
I ers have been unequal to the task
required of them. If the malcontents
will lay aside personal ambitions and
put their shoulders to the wheel in
an honest endeavor to achieve the
great task before us, they will find
their ambitions much surer of at
tainment than by Instigating a fight
that could have no other effect than
to embarrass the administration.
If republican leaders will take Ex
Secretary Hoot's advice and forget
that (hey have any political bias, and
if the administration will remember
that the patriotism or republicans is
Just as deep and fervid as their own,

Americans (o revive old political con
teats and reopen old political Hores.
