Exceptional Musical
Treat for Burns People
One of the most satisfactory
and enjoyable musical programs
lever heard in Burns was given
last Thursday evening at Tona-
wama by Hartridge G. Whips,
jjbaritone, ot Portland. Several
musical people of our city are lav
jish in their praise of this very
charming and high class enter
Itainment The writer having been one of
jthose instrumental in bringing
this exceptional treat t ) Burns is
rather handicapped in expressing
the real feeling of approval. It
wa8 a pity more of our younger
musical set did not hear him.
Mr. Whipp showed remarkable
dramatic force and made each
.selection so realistic that it was
Mmost entertaining. He gave a
distinctly high class program
throughout and his audience did
lot want him to quit, bringing
lim back even at the close to re-
4ipond to a most insistent encore.
Mr. Whipp has a wonderful
Jsange and perfect control of voice
rhich was brought up to advan-
IM&ore in some of the numbers.

Market Report
North Portland cattle market
took a jump this morning and
went to 7. 25 for best steers. The
market is fully 30 to 86c higher
for same quality stuff as last
week. All offerings were sold
and for the most part weighed
before noon. The market has a
strong tendency.
Hogs not to be outdone by cat
tle put on a five cent advance
this afternoon going to 6.15 and
finishing steady. Eighty-six
hundred head went over the scal
es, the largest single day receipts
ever marketed at North Portland.
The ease with which they were
absorbed was remarkable.
All lines are steady on sheep
with but short supplies being
marketed. Top lambs still are
quoted at 7.50.

Huild Railroad Line
Direct to Burns
Continued from page ona)
desiring a speedy adjudication of
the rights of the Silvies River
water and of the dilatory manner
in which the State Board is pro.
ceeding. He spoke of the great
necessity of bringing this matter
to a close in order that the de
velopment of the country may go
ahead.
Mr. Leonard waa asked to say
a few words but simply respond
ed by saying the people of this
vicinity were glad Mr. Strahom
had come to us in person and
had made his position in his pro
posed enterprise clear and not to
forget the importance of the
railroad.
Mr. Strahom left by the way
of Bend Wednesday morning, go
ing out in company with Frank
Dibble who is familiar with the
proposed route between Burns
and Silver Creek and no doubt
the gentleman gained consider
able information on his way out.
The people of this vicinity are
much interested in Mr. Strahorn's
enterprises and he is going to find
active support in this county.
Every public spirited citizen rea
lizes the bigness of the under
taking and what it means toward
the development of thia big in
terior country. However, the
immediate needs of Burns are to
have his first consideration. The
railroad connection with the Gap
must be made in the immediate
future. The scheme to make
this a link in the east and west
line across the state is desirable
and is given due consideration,
yet, unless Mr. Strahom will
give positive assurance of the im
mediate connection of this town
to the line now building into the
Valley, we must look elsewhere
for it.
We realize most forcibly the
critical situation so far as this
immediate territory is concerned
are not going to sit by and see
advantages taken of the situation
that wi!l lie detrimental to the
interests of Burns through delay.
The line from Crane Creek must
be constructed during the coming
year in order to satisfy the citi
zens of this vicinity. This must
go forword with the least possible
; delay in order that the big irri
gation project may by given im
petus and brought about with
just as much speed as conditions
will permit.
Gorgeous Wedding.
(Contributed)
There was a most beautiful
scene at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Ray Smith on Wednesday,
Dec. 8th, when their daughter
Beulah was united in marriage
to Glenn C. Clenens.
The ceremony took place at
noon, and was performed by
Rev. Dr. Benson. Miss Verda
Sturtevant was bridesmaid, and
Richard Hayes waa beat man.
The bride was exceedingly love
ly in white crepe-de-chine, gar
nished with finest Brussels lace,
with a border embroidered in
iridescent beads. She carried a
shower bouquet of white carna
tions and Sprenghert fern. The
bridesmaid was also very pretty
indeed in pink satin with an over
dress of rich lace.
Four little girls in white stretch
ed the ribbons for the Bridal Lane
two of them twins, and sisters
of the bride -Marie and Maris
Smith the other two Pearl and
Jessie Ferguson.
There was an elaborate repast
served after the congratulations
had been said, with covers laid
for twenty-four guests, most of
them relatives of the bride and
groom.
At the middle of the table a
large flower-basket was suspend
ed from the ceiling, covered with
pink crepe paper, and holding
white carnations and asparagus
fern; and from this in all direc
tions were runners of pink and
white alternately, fastened to
the cloth about six Inchon apart.
Tall wax candles in old fashioned
brass candlesticks furnished the
illumination. Small pine boughs
were hung around the picture
rail, interspersed with pink crepe
chrysanthemums, looking alive
for all the world. They were in
great profusion in the festoons
of green and white that stretch
ed from the big white bell also
decorated with them to differ
ent parts of the south room.
where the bridal pair took their
vows. It was like fairy land.
The darkened rooms were lighted
artificially.
Mrs. . W. Lewis played the
wedding march, and rendered
several vocal and piano solos,
and 'tis whispered that she had
a great deal to do with get
ting up the fine display. While
we were enjoying the feast the
telephone bell rang, and Mr.
Lewis being seated nearest, an
swered the summons with "We
have'no time to talk now!" whleb
caused a lot of merriment
The father, Mr. Peter Clemens
has given his son a farm on which
be has erected a beauriful new
house, four or five miles north of
town where Mistress Beulah can
now put into practical demon
stration the domoHti' hi
has been learning ut the Harney
County High School, from which
institution the whole bridal party
seemed to have graduuh'il rather
sooner than Prof . Shirk exxHtl.

more friends than anv other man

in years but young at heart and
he is always greeted with plea
