In response to the appeal of the state Belgian Relief committc appointed by the Governor, the city authorities of Burns took the matter up at the regular meeting last Wednesday evening and ap pointed a local committee to solicit funds. The committee consists of Rev. Dr. Benson of the Presbyterian church. in. Farre and Julian Byrd. The Times-Herald is requested to announce that some member of this committee will call upon the people of this city during the coming week and ascertain tin ir wishes. It is desirable to lead something from Burns and as the railroads carry anything for this purpose free to Portland the com mittee will accept anything in the line of clothing, imperishable food, as well as cash. Few of our people realize the conditions in that little country where there are 7,000,000 people in a territory no larger than Harney county entirely destitute, without food or homes and no possible relief except from out side sources. A Wonderful Per formance on the Violin. in Burns where he had resided almost continuously since 1896. He had been suffering from stomach trouble for many years but he was always cheerful and had a kind word for his friends when he met them. Mr. Bennett made three trips across the con tinent to Freeport Maine, after establishing his residence here in lS'-Mi; he would get homesick for the old place and go back to Maine but would soon tire of it and come back. Deceased was born in Freeport. Maine, March 24, 1837. At the age of 20 he moved to Cambridge, Illinois and was married there in 1859. He followed farming until the war when he enlisted and served with distinction until its close, being discharged in 1865. He saw active service during the entire period of his enlistment, taking part in 27 recorded battles. At the close of the war he return ed to Cambridge and again took up farming, later moving to Red ding, Iowa in 1871, returned to Freeport in 1885, coming to Burns in 1896. Mr. Bennett had no near rela tives, his five brothers and one sister having died and he had no children. The funeral services were con ducted Wednesday afternoon from the Nazarene church, being in charge of the G. A. R. and Spanish American War Veterans. Rev. Dr. Babbidge delivered the sermon and he was interred in the. Burns cemetery beside his wife. Additional Locals. A. W. Hurlburt is in from his home near Harney Lake.
