Dr. Carl Griffith returned Mon
nay evening from his vacation
trip to Portland and other points.
He says he had a good rest and
is ready for the harness again.
A fire alarm was turned in
Wednesday evening about six
o'clock and the boys responded
with the engines but did not have
to do any fighting as the fire was
put out befote it had gotten any
headway. The flames were dis
covered in the barn on the W. Y,
King residence property and we
understand were set by a man
smoking a pipe.
A petition is in circulation ask
ing the county court to investi
gate a change in the Canyon road
that it is claimed will cut off the
steep grades up the mountain
toward the Cold Springs and also
making a Raving of 2 miles be
tween Burns and the Metschan
place in Silvies Valley. This
petition askB for a continuation
of the l-one Pine road, directly
north from Burns, which is now
a county road for almost the en
tire distance to Silvies. It is
worth investigating and may
prove to be the best route toward
Canyon.
Dr. Benson, pastor of the
Presbyterian church of this city,
who is spending a month at
Portland with his wife and sons,
writes he has enjoyed his visit
very much but he finds his mind
wandering back to his work in
Burns and planning on his re
turn. Dr. Benson has been con
fering with an architect on pluna
for the proposed new church here
and will have them in the hands
of his trustees at once. He also
writes that Mr. and Mrs. Nollie
Reed were to take tea with the
Benson family on the day he
Ches. Hibbard. Will Could and
Allan Biggs arrived home the
fore part of the week from their;
outing trip to Steens Mountain.
The boys r port a fine time hut

got mixed in their dates und
came home earner than they
wanted to.
Among local business men who
will attend "buyers week" in
Portland are I. Schwartz and
Curtis Smith. They will be ac
companied by their wives, the
Schwartz's also taking little
Belda with them. Dorman I'on
ard also expects to go down and
spend a short time in the metro
polis. Wm. Stirling, the accountant,
has been appointed by the ac-
tcounting department of the Htate
insurance department to audit
the books of this and Malheur
counties and will likely do the
work some time in October. The
period covered is from Jan. 1 to
Sept. 30. Mr. Stirling audited
the books of this county once.
F. H. Fawcett, the game war
den, spent a few days in town
this week. He investigated
some alleged violations of the
game laws but did not find suffi
cient evidence to make any com
plaint upon. The boys who have
been reported killing sane hens
before the open season had bet
ter look a little sharp as they're
going to get in trouble yet.
Hon. R. A. Booth, republican
candidate for U. S. Senator, will
be here next Saturday to attend
the "Round-up" at the Experi
ment Station and in the evening
of the same day he will speak to
the people of this vicinity at
Tonawama Theatre, Mr. Booth
has a number of acquaintances
in this section as he has been a
prominent man in the state for
many years and has oome in con
tact with many Harney county
people, He is a very pleasant
gentleman and his friends and
admirers hope he may be able to
met t and talk with as many of
our people as possible.
