Mrs. Mahon's straw- iiirry and raspberry patch was n source of envy to the writer and he has invited himself up there at the rik'lit season of the yeur to see how well they bear. Another result of the trip is that the firm has a nice 100 acres Million Ceo. Sam Mothersheud went over to Juntura Thursday afternoon in his car t n meet Miss Bank Swain on her return home from Wallowa where she has been teaching. He was accompanied by his little son John, Mrs. A. S. Swain and Mrs. Julian Hyrd. They encountered very muddy roads on the return trip and did not attempt to make It through yesterday afternoon, coming on ly to Buchanan's and on in this morning. We don't suppose that the wonderings of the Editor la of much interest to our readers and are not telling this tale in order to burden them with that topic, but we do want to that in the six or seven hundred miles that we traveled during that period in stage, automobile and on Mrs. Harrimans railroad. we have been led to believe be head is some auto driver arid we'll guarantee can throw more thrills into the occupants in a minute than any other man in this town. If you don't believe i ust ride with him. Bids Being Arranged on Mail Contracts. yond a reasonable doubt thai Central Oregon is the. beet I r man's country in the west. We became acquainted with a lot of Harney County that we had never heretofore Been, and words fail us in trying to describe that wonderful country and its pot i bilities. To the outsider Harm County has never been proper.'. described, or at least we never have heard a description that started to do it justice. As a small grain and live stock pro ducer it has anything beat that have ever seen, and the wonder ful thing about it all is that the work is just starting; there is room for thousands of families and there will be thousands of homes added to those already there as soon as the railroad starts active construction within the boundaries of that great in land empire. To use Mr. Ilan ley's description of Harney Val ley we would say that it is a "first course country, " producing the meat and bread, leaving the second course or the "desert" of man's existence to the warm fer tile valleys of Malheur county, where fruit and berries and the more tender vegetation thrive It is a wonderful country. It is hardly known yet, and the mosl sanguine booster among il bunch of live wires can't imagine what it will be in ten .yens. We are glad we are here. JackrabbiU now Scarcer. As a result of a party making a trip to Cow Creek and return Sunday there are i several It rabbits as well as sage rata and one rattle snake less to "pester" people. Neil Smith can do more shooting to the square acre with an auto going at the rate of 80 miles an hour than any other C. W. I.inebaugh, a represent ative of the Post Office Depart ment, has been here for several days consulting with people and arranging for bids on the sev eral mail routes leading out from Burns. He has succeeded in getting bids on a part of the lines and expects to have all of them carat! for before leaving this section. Mr. I.inebaugh will go to Andrews tomorrow to look after two contracts from that point, one to Denio and the other to Follyfarm. He will re turn this way and wind up the contracts that are still not bid on. Some bids have been submitted and forwarded to the Depart ment on a satisfactory basis so far as himself and the contractors are concerned but of course they may not meet the approval of the Department jn which event l hey would be resubmitted. At present the route from Junturs i lr hut three times a week but at the time they were advertised the trains were run to that point bul three times each week and with a daily train service this may be changed; however, noth ing definite is known of such an arrangement The matter of a new lease for the post office in Hums is an other matter that Mr. Linebaugh is looking after. He has made complete specifications as to equipment) floor space, etc., and these may be seen at the office hy intending bidders, the bids must he submitted before the last of this month.
