Valuable Collection in Danger of Destruction A fire was discovered Wednes day afternoon on the roof of the payilion at the fair grounds and the prompt arrival of those In that vicinity and their heroic work with buckets saved the valuable collection of taxidermy that has been stored there .since the Lewis anc Clark fair. At the time it was returned from Portland there was no suitable building available for its occu pancy and those in chage of the Fair Association were glad to have it placed down there as it was an attraction, besides being a moBt proper for its display. At that time the funds necessary for its installation and mounting was subscribed by the people of Burns but there was not sufficient to cover the collection with kI.-ik.-j. This should have been done 1 1 -fore now but the collection be longs to the county and (hers has been no disposition to make an appropriation for such a pur pose and it is j'ust as well none was provided as it is too valuable to be allowed to remain in that shack where there is cons'. ant danger of its being consumed bj fire and exposed to mien! . The fire caught from the stove pipe some boys having got) in into the building and filled Ua stove with straw and ignited It Every window in the building has been broken out and the l k torn from door by boys that should have the attention of the authorities since their parents seem to have no control over them, The fire boys responded and made the run to the grounds quickly but the apparatus, was ity. Some of the assignments were quite difficult for pupils of their age. yet they were fault lessly executed. The writer will not attempt to make particular mention of indi vidual performers they all did splendid nor will space permit the publication of the program today. The members of the class who participated were: James Brandon, Gladys Byrd, Ruby Campbell, David Cawlfield, Geary Clevengsr, Alex Eggleston, Kcl Goodman. Kathrine Karre, C. A. Harlan, Violet Harkey, Terence Haney, Kathleen Jordan. Frank Loggan. Gwendolyn I-ampshire, Muriel Mace, Hazel Owsley, Roselle Reed, Baxter Reed. Theo Sprague Alletta Smith. ihe accompanists were: Misses Florsbel Goodman, Evelyn Byrd, Bessie Smith, Mrs. Leo Fisher, Mr. .fames D. Fellows. Presbyterian Church Service Sunday morning the pastors of all churches in the country are asked to preach on the evils of war arid the blessings of peace. This is a most timely subject see ing our present international com plications. In compliance with A Grand Musical Treat. Music lovers of this place were given n treat last Saturday even ing at Tonawama that is seldom the privilege of (hose living so far from the larger cities, when Qsorgs Wither Heed, dramatic tenor, and Mrs. James Lester (iiiult appeared in concert. It was an unqualified success. The house was tilled with a most ap preciative audience and their en joyment and interest were at tested by the close and respect ful attention during the rendition of every number. It is seldom one finds a better behaved audi ence in an interior town where such talent is seldom heard and very rarely appreciated by a large gathering of people. So well were the artists receiv ed and the evident interest inani Tested thai Mr. Reed informed the writer before taking his de parture for Portland that he was seriously considering the proposi tion of returning to Burns this fall and give another concert-he will certainly do so if he remains on the coast instead of returning to England, as he now has under consideration. Mr. Reed has a charming personality and at once won the people with his manner and most excellent voice. He is certainly an exceptional singer and one who knows music as few do. The writer is not capable of going into detail respecting the numbers on the program, as it was difficult for him to express preference in any of the several selections rendered. Mr. Reed seemed to have perfect control of his voice ami each time he ap peared it seemed he did better. "The Little White House" group appealed particularly to his hear ers, although he rendered more difficult numbers. His reportoire ranged from grand opera to sim ple ballads in dialect and each was rendered with such feeling and voice as to bring generous applause and appreciation. Mrs. Gault's numbers were particularly pleasing as her many admirers in this city were most agreeably urprised at the im provement since her three months coaching wiih Mr. Reed in Port land, lira. Gault has been n favorite among the singers of this place for si veral years and the has on many u, caSiooi shown her ability in this line but her friends weie hardly prepared to bear such a wonderful improve ment in her already taperb voice. She rendered the most difficult numbers in very charming way and quite Captivated her listeners. Some of her numbers were most brilliant and showed her wonder ful range in gfSSt advantage. Her duets with Mr. Reed showed the excellent quality of her voice and these were well received. The numbers rendered by the Treble Clef I lub, the young ladies w ho have been under the tutor ship of Mrs. (Jault, were very pleasing and added to the enjoy ment of the entertainment. Mrs. A. ('. Wclcomeaccompanied these in a very able manner. James I). Fellows, the accom plished pianist accompanied Mr. Reed and Mrs. (iault and added most charmingly to the success of the entertainment. Mr. Fel lows showed his skill and mastery of the instrument by following the difficult music in a very sym pathetic manner. In all it was decidedly the most classical musical entertainment ever undertaken in this city and was of such high character as will instill a higher ideal among the music lovers, of which Burns has a large number. The re markable talent in this line was remarked by Mr. Reed during his stay here and he was especi such artists as Mrs. Gault. Mrs. Rembold and Mrs. Dodge, who were doing remarkable work in their respective lines toward higher ideals in music. BAPTIST CHURCH. 10 a. m. Sunday School. 11 a. m. Peace Day.
