Discard the amall. partially torsional) kernels from the tip of the ears. Why ? Because such kernels do not yield well. As It Is highly advisable that the corn plantar ahould drop an equal mini ber of kernels In each hill, which It cannot do unless the kernels arc of uul form else and shape. It Is idrlaabta to classify the eara before shelltng them Those having large kernels should be Included In one class and those having medium also kernels in another class. Each class abould be shelled and bag ged separately. To these bags the planter plates that testing has shown will drop regularly the proper number of kernels should be tied Cur conven ience) at planting time. Shelled aeed corn can be cleaned and graded by expenalve, properly adjust ed grades, but the method Just de acrlbed of clasaifylng the ears tiefore shelling U more aatlafactory. Hew to Shell Seod Corn. Seed corn abould be abelled by hand Careful hand shelling pays the man who plants but a few acres, and It pays to a greater degree the man who plants hundreds of acres. I'otssb Is usually s secondary need on such soils. Nitrogen Is not necessary as a fertiliser on unproductive black soils, except In a few cases. Potash and phosphoric acid will remain In the soil until used (loose sands snd gravels except ed), so there need be no fear of lose In making large applications of mineral fertilisers. A field plst test Is the only aure method of determining the ferti liser treatment needed, although the character of the vegetation la an Indication.
