Value of Headlines.
The real purpose of the head
line is to catch the eye of the
reader, and interest him in the
subject matter. Thai is the
purpose of the headline to Jhe
news item, and that should he
the purpose of the headline to
the ad.
The news item would be ex
tremely unattractive if the
paper did not feature the mosl
important news items with ap
propriate headings.
In most of the isrse metro
politan papers the highest sal
aried men are headline writers,
The rnanagement of big papers
appreciate the great valve of
headlines consisting of B few
well chosen words, which give
the gist of the news in the
items. Good keadlines add to
the value of the paper. Very
few people read every item in
the paper in this busy age, and
the headlines make it easy for
them at a glance to chose the
items they want to read.
Headlines tell the story in
the item below in the shortesj
and most concise form.
The news is gotten up in
Buch shape as to attract and
appeal to the readers so as to
sell the papers.
Advertising is news relative
to a business. It is equally
true of advertising that it
should be gotten up in such
shape as to attract and appeal
to the readers so si to sell
goods.
The advertiser has much to
learn from the news writer.
The news writer writes the
news first and then constructs
the headlines. Likewise the
advertiser should write the
body of the Bdvertisemenl
first and then construct the
headings.
The first purpose should he
to write an ad that is convinc
ing in itself. Then top it ofT
with a headline or headlines
that attract the reader and
capture his attention.
The headline to a news item
contains the ist of the news
story, and the headline of an
ad should contain the gist of

The store building that was
destroyed belonged to Dr. Horton
of this place who states there
was no insurance. It was oc-

had a stock of goods in it. He
succeeded in saving a part of the

A happy company of people
assembled at the Presbyterian
manse Tuesday evening and gave
Dr. and Mrs. Babbidge a sur
prise the nature of an old fashi
oned "pound party." There
were between 60 and 70 people
present and each brought a pound
of something that would come
in handy in the ladder when the
liabbidges get down on the farm.
Dr. Babbidge has resigned as
pastor of the church in this city
and they are planning to make
their home on the farm recently
acquired near Lawen. Some of
their friends decided to give
them a farewell surprise and a
large number of the Baptist
ladies joined with the Presby
terians with the result that a
very pleasant evening was spent
and the affair was very much
appreciated by the Babbidges.
Refreshments were served and
some singing and talks were
given.
