They hare clalmeil Hint to keep hor on the farm a like "going 10 hunt prairie chickens with n bull pup," or Uke "riding Into buttle on u heavy draught horse." Those men wore hou eat In their statements, but they sim ply did not know They thought they knew, but they were mistaken More over, they claimed thut dual cattle could not be bred. Par twenty-five years some of those men have been diligently propagating that nonsense, and the public funds have, borne the cxpenae. Tha folly of such teaching will be apparent from the follewing: In Bag land there la today an association for promoting the Interests of this breed. This association has now lit mem bars. In 1012 It published the records of milk production from IM4 females. of which quite a percentage were heifers with their first lactation pe riod. Tha average of milk production from these was between 7,000 and 1,000 pounds for the year Some went higher than 13,000 pounds. At Kel anacott, Lechlade, tiloucestershlre. the owner, Robert Hobbs. haa kept milk ing Shorthorns constantly since 1S7N. The herd now numbers nearly UO.i cowa In milk. Since 1908 the average Of all these. Including a large lot of heifers. In milk production has been considerably more than 1,000 pounds each year. The cow Dulcle Tth. with a one-year milk record ending Muy II, 1913. gave 13.5311 pounds, and the cow Roea 37th 14.177 pounds Many other Instances of similar production nuiy be cited. Cows of this It. i.i aland flnt In the milking trials of the shows more frequently than those of any other breed. Including the milking breads. While the production of milk Is thus highly satisfactory, all the males not wanted for beef are grown Into bul locks. They are reared on hUIiii milk end adjuncts during the milk period They era aold ut the age of eighteen to thirty months. At twenty-four montba they usually average not less than 1,200 pounds, and sell for 1100 to 1126 each Tbey are favorites with the butcher, as there Is less loss tn cutting up the carcaaa tbun with bul locks reared on tha dams There is a larger proportion of lean and less un desirable fat on lbs hand reared ateera. It la a fact tbat fully so per cent of the milk used In llrltaln cornea from pure and grade Shorthorns and nearly as high a percentage of the meet. Mr. Howell, the venerable secretary of the Shorthorn association, told tha writer tbat even many of the breeders of Scotch Shorthorns are now milking their herds. Tblnk or the prices which those cuttle bring. At the dispersal aale of f'.urrett luylor last year 183 females of nil egea sold for en average of 83, lUs, M The people of Argentina, South Africa. New Zealand and Australia are now buying these cattle In large numbers, end yet the wise men of our stations claim that they can't be bred. Mr. Hill's Shorthorn Importation consists of twenty-eight animals, of which three are males. The females ere young cowa from two to six yaara old. They are all now milking and. will calra again In due time. Individ ually they rank high, having been chosen with much care. They have milk records running from 0,000 to 10,000 pounds a year. There la certainly large room for thla claae or cattle In all the North western states. This does not mean that there Is no place for the dairy breedi. There la a wide place alao for the dairy braeds. but viewed from the standpoint of tbe present and pros pective demand for beef there a a much larger place for dual cattle. This In future must come from the arable farm, and It must come mainly from dual cattle that will be milked. ORIGIN OF QUARANTINE. Dr. Riohard Mead's Aetion During tha Plague of 1721.
