articles made and the products
grown by the children were ex

selected and forwarded to the
State Pair at Salem, where the
children were awarded prize ill

It was pointed out that under
the provisions of Senate Bill 72,
passed at tne recent session oi
of the Legislature, the counties
of the state are authorized to
provide an unlimited amount oi
money for the purpose of carry-

The Forest Service department
has recently taken up the work
of reclassification of lands in the
national forest reserves with a
view to opening up for settle
ment such agricultural lands as
may now be included within the
reserve boundaries. Under the
plan for this work the bureau of
soils will determine what soils
are agricultural in character,
experts of the forest service will
determine whether or not the
value of the timber on sod) lands
is greater than the agricultural
valuation, and if not, any lands
which are found valuable for
agriculture and not needed for
public purposes will be immediat
ely opened to settlement and
entry under the homestead laws.
The United States forestry
service and the state game ward
ens will co-operate for the pro
tection of game, as well as of the
forests, under an agreement re
cently entered into between State
Game Warden Finlev and Dis-. prompt recovery. In some -intact
Forester Cecil.' The agree-(stances, however, more applica-
ment provides that rangers, as
sistant rangers and other officers
may be appointed deputy game
wardens. They will report all
violations of the game laws with
in their respective districts and
will also make arrests in cases
which come under their personal
observation, except during the
fire season. On the other hand,
the regular deputy game wardens
will extinguish any small fires
they may discover and all such
fires will be as promptly as pos
sible reported to the forest officer
in charge of the district.
Surprising Clire of Stomach Troul les.
When you have trouble with
your stomach or chronic con
stipation, don't imagine that your
case is beyond help just because
your doctor fails to give you relief.
Mrs. G. Stengele, Plainfield, N.
J,, writes, "For over a month
past I have been troubled with
my stomach. Everything I ate
upset it terribly. One of Cham
berlain's advertising booklets
came to me. After reading a
few of the letters from people
who had been cured by Chamber
lain's Tablets, I decided to try
them. I have taken nearly thn-e-fourths
of a package of them and
can now eat almost everything
that I want." For sale by all

Sulphur as Plant
Food is
Discussed
"Will sulphur finally be con
sidered a critical plant food?"
aaks Prof. H. V. Tartar, chemiel
of the Oregon Agricultural Ex
periment Station in the May
Oregon Countryman, published
by agricultural college students,
"No one questions the absolute
naOMfity Of SUlphur for plant I
g-rowtn. it is as necessary as im
potash, nitrogen or phosphorus.
"The apparent reason why so
litUe attention has been given to
sulphur in the schemes for ferti
lization for permanent plant pro
duction has been due to the fact
that it was believed that crops
removed but little from the soil
and consequently the supply was
.ample for the continuous growing
oi piBnis, jine amount. 01 sutunui
in soils is low. In many instanc-
m there is ' present in the long
cropped soil only half the quantity
which was present in the original
virgin soil.
"In the state of Oregon it ia a
! common practice to use land
plaster (gypsum, a sulphate of
lime), as fertiliser, especially for
the growing of clover and altaita.
The beneficial results obtained
from the use of this material have
often been explained on the basis
of its action as a stimulant It
has been shown that it aids in
the liberation of potash from the
soil. Yet it is a notorious fact
that its beneficial effect is often
far in excess of that which might
be ascribed to the potash liberat
ed. It has its best effect on
those crops which required a
I'oodl. v amount of sulphur.
"Very little attention has, as
yet, been given to the supplying
of sulphur as a fertilizing materi
al. A few experiments were
tried aat year in thia and fopeg,.
countriea and at this time but
)ittje of tne data obtained is
; nvaiiable. It is a subject for
f,,rther investigation by the
iChemjBts and agronomists. "

Removing Scale on
Calves' Eyes and Noses
In response to an inquiry from
Bend, Dr. B. W. Hollis, veterin
arian of the Oregon Agricultural
College, writes as follows on the
treatment of scale growth on the
eves and noses of calves:
' 'I note that you say your calves
and yearlings have a heavy scale
around their eyes and down on
the nose. This scale is due to a
fungus growth, and in most cases
will come off of its own accord in
the spring. Cases which are
extensive should, however, be
treated promptly.
"As treatment I would recom
mend that you scrape off the
scale with a knife or other suit
able instrument for the purpose
and then paint the surface of the
wound with tincture of iodine.
About three paintings will usually
be enough to bring about a
tions will be necessary.
"A few doses of potassium
iodine internally will assist in
curing more obstinate cases. Of
this I would recommend two tea
spoonfuls twice daily continued
for four days; then an interival
of three days, followed by a four
days course again. The above
dosage is for any calf over three
months old and under six. Larg-
r animals should receive larger
doses in proportion."
