Parrish went over to Canyon City Wednesday after spending the winter here with his daughter. Mrs. W. A. Gowan. Mr. Parrish is becoming quite feeble and his many friends all over this country hope he may be spared to again visit us in the near future. T. L. Dugger, the young man who had u bad arm caused by a dislocation of the elbow which was not given proper attention, came back fiom Hoise the fore part of the week where an opera tion had put it in better shape. It will never be a good arm again but is much better than before he went away. Mr. Dugger started for his home at Denio, Wednesday. I. H. Ho'land arrived hume Tuesday from Boise where he met his brother, Henry and wife and daughter, all of whom ac companied him home on a visit. Mr. Holland made his stay rather short, being called away on busi ness, but Mrs. Holland and daughter will remain for a longer period. Mr. Holland visited here for a day three years ago. Their borne is in Boston. Judge Hector states that the Japanese land question was much discussed throughout California. He says it is an important matter down there that should have had attention before the Japs got such a good hold. Judge Rector states that in some parts these little foreigners have gotten hold of a large amount of land and have developed it to a greater extent than me white men would, as they are more persistent and work hard. In other sections they pay as high as $60 an acre rental per year for land and pump the water on it to raise a crop. But two of the pupils of the Burns public school who took the eighth grade examination were successful, Kllen Ueer and Trilby Whitaker. The others failed in one or more studies and will have another chance in June. The grades were very good with the exception of in two studies, spell ing and arithmetic, both being unusually hard. The school here was interrupted considerable throughout the entire year, start ing lute on account of the new building not being completed and again stopped in mid winter on account of a quarantine, there fore the pupils have done re markably well under the circum stances. The three who took the examination from the JJrewsey school all passed with fine aver ages. They were; Margaret Bruce, T. W. and Elizabeth Beede. (Jeer took his departure Thursday morning for Illinois and WisconBin where he goes to purchase several car loads of Holstein cows which the Harney County National Bank will ship in to dispose of to the farmers of this section. Mr. Geer will be particular in his selection of stock and as he understands his business we may rest assured of securing some of the best stock of that popular dairy breed for Harney county. A delightful 600 party was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. I. II. Holland Thursday evening in which Mrs. Lelah Millar was joint hostess. A large company enjoyed the evening, the table honors going to Mrs. Wm. Farre and Mrs. Henry Hol land; the lucky gentlemen were C. F. McKinney and I. Schwartz. The prizes were particularly handsome. An elegant luncheon was served after the hands were played and Mrs. Gault rendered several fine vocal selections with Mr. Fellows presiding at the piano. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hol land and daughter, Miss Gladys, met many during the evening and were made welcome to our city. Thia is a feature that haa been re quested by several and as inanj are familiar with the tory it should prove a line evening's en tertainment. School Children's Fair. While in Burns this week Supt. Hamilton completed ar rangements for an Industrial fair for the school children to he held the week beginning Sept. 30. Just how many days the fair will continue is not yet determined and will likely be governed by what the county fair does and the amounf of interest shown by the schools. A list of the premiums for this industrial lair will be out next week and be diatributed throughout the county. The prizes will be cash but several business men of Hum.; have signified their intention to add special prizes to the n gular U ' that will bring the prises toaooM -thing worth while. The list will include everything that can b raised in the gardens of this territory. No doubt proper steps will be taken later to provide athletics and other amusements for the period which will add to the in terest of the proposed fair, mak ing it altogether a glad time for the school children oMhe county.
