with n view to purchase.
(Portland Correspondent)
Invitations have been issued
by the Orejron State Immigration
Commission to representatives of
German speaking colonies and
organisations to meet at the
Portland Commercial Club May
n.ivid Starr Jordan, president
of Leland Stanford University,
hns discovered a new variety of
fish in Coast streams of this
state, naming it "Antherinops
OroRonia." It resembles the
smelt, but is larger. It has never
16, where plans will be discussed bwn properly classified before,
for attracting German InUBign
tion. Representatives of t h a
churches, the German press, the
German farmers' colonies, ttc,
are asked to attend and it is ex
pected the hearing will develop
practicol method of Including
desirable farmers from North
Europe to settle in this state.
Jackson County is one district
of the state well organised for
industrial school fairs this fall.
Interest is high in the movement
and the various communities will
offer attractive prizes for the
best work of the school children.
In addition to the County fair,
various school fairs will be held.
Farmers who are interested in
growing corn are invited to try
seed furnished free by the O. W.
R; A N. Co. Twelve pound lots
will be given out, being about
enough to plant one acre, to ail
farmers applying for it. This is
acclimated seed and C. L. Smith.
agriculturist for that line, main
tains that Oretton can be made
one of the foremost corn states.
The place of meeting of the
Oregon State Bankers' associa
tion has been changed from
Roseburg to Corvallis. The dates
are June 15-16. Roseburg's new
hotel will not be finished in time,
making the change advisable.
Cottage Grove is going to form
a cannery association and operate
an establishment throughout the
fruit and vegetable growing sea
sons As is usual, the local
Commercial Club is taking the
lead in organizing the project.
One and one-third fares for
the round trip are offered by the
railroads to those who attend the
Conference on the Conservation
of Human Life at Reed College,
Portland, May 9-11. Tickets
will be good for return up to
May 13.
The State Forestry Depart

cups for distribution" among
school children, there being
printed upon each cup a state
ment of the importance of pre

the young will be enlisted in the
work of forest preservation.
The Oregon State Bankers'
Association is conferring with
representatives of German coloni
es who are looking for available
tracts of land upon which to
colonize 3,500 German farmers.
Tracts in different parts of the
being called a variety of smelt.
H.nlth
Factor in Succ.is.
The largest factorcontributinr
to a man's success is undoubtedly
health. It has been observed
that a man is seldom sick when
his bowels are regular he is
never well when they are con
stipated. For constipation you
will find nothing quite so good as
Chamberlain's Tablets. They
not only move the bowles but im
prove the appetite and strength
en the digestion. They are for
ale by all dealers.
A Ranchman's Bread.
Ranchman's bread is made as
follows, according to the recipt
in the camp cookery bulletin is
sued last year by the Oregon
Agricultural College and now
out of print.
Mix a lard pail two-thirds full
of medium battel of flour and
water, adding one tablespoon of
sugar. Allow it to stand until
the mixture has fermented and
then become sour. Pour out
about half a cup of the sour
dough and add half a teaspoon of
salt, a teaspoon of lard and
enough flour to make a very soft
dough.
Melt lard or other grease in a
pan and drop the dough in with
a spoon, turning it over in the
grease. Allow it to raiae until
about double in bulk, and then
bake. The half cup of sour
dough taken out may be poured
back in the lard pail and the
original quantity of batter stirred
up. It will all be sour in a few
hours, and ready for use. The
exact amount of soda added de
pends on the sourness of the
dough, and must be determined
by experience.
Moil Prompt and Effectual Cur for
Bad Cold..
When you have a bad cold you
want a remedy that will not only
give relief, but effect a prompt
and permanent cure, a remedy
that is pleasant to take, a remedy
that contains nothing injurious.
Chamberlain's Cough Remed
meets all these requirements. It
acts on nature's plan, relieves
the lungs, aids expectoration,
opens the secretions and restores
the system to a healthy condition.
This remedy has a world wide
sale and use, and can always be
depended upon. Sold by all
dealers.

Short-Horn Mull, and the other
Trans-Continental lines in this
territory huvo signified there in
tention of donating cups for
different breeds. Similar cups
given by railroad last year were
much admired by the people and
highly prized by the winners.
Different Ways of
Preserving Eggs.
Practical Baking Lessons
CAKES, (Continued)
In luat week's lesson, I gave full directions and
and two simple recipes (or cake baking. The grast
essentials in making cakes, are to use good materials,
to measure carefully, and to use ear in baking. A caka
should look appetising. A careless cook will seldom
make a good caka or one that looks good. It Is worth
while to use a little extra car and attention in order to
nave a nice appearing caka.
LuvclJU CQtCjM
"Kggs may be preserved for
several months by different
methods" says l'rof. James Dry
den of tin' poultry department
of the Oregon Agricultural Col
lege. "If put up right in the
spring the) may be kept till the
following fall or winter. They
will not be as good, however, as
fresh-laid eggs.
"A method that wiH preserve
the original quality of the eggs
for an indefinite period has not
yet been discovered. By cold
storage, SggS are put up in large
quantities during the spring sea
son when prices are low, but
where it is desired to preserve a
small quantity for home use the
cold storage method is not practi
cable. "Kggs intended for stor
age should be fresh and clean.
March or April eggs will keep
better than May or June eggs.
The sooner they are put into
storage after being laid the bet
ter they will keep.
THK MMK MKTIIOD.
Dissolve a pound of lime in
five gallons of water. The water
should be boiled previously to
sterilized it. and then cooled.
Stir thoroughly, and let settle.
Then pour otr the clear liquid in
to a wooden or earthen jar or
tub. Fill with Sgjn to within an
inch of the top of the liquid.
This will allow for evaporation.
The liquid should not be allowed
to get lower than the top of the
eggs. When the vessel is filled
with eggs, cover it with coarse
muslin or factory, over which
spread a paste of lime to exclude
the air.
TIIK WATKK-Ol.ASS METHOD
"Water-glass (sodium silicate)
may be purchased at the drug
stores. Vm' the liquid form and
the commercial grade in the
proportions of one part water-
glass to eight parts water. Use
earthen jars or wooden tubs or
barrels that are perfectly clean,
and store in a clean, cool place.
The material used will cost about
a cent for each dozen eggs
stored."
