(Pram Our Portland Oorntpottdenl
The Orearon Almanac issued
by the State Immigration Com
mission, is in demand by schools
and colleges when it is used as
textbook, which is helping
along the
"know-your-statr"
movement. The almanac, of
which an edition of 380.0W was
printed, is filled with data care
fully gathered and compiled and
is, in substance, an admirable
encyclopedia on Oregon, This
book is being distributed to In
quirers in all parti of the coun
try from the Portland headquar
ten of the Oregon Development
League and copies will be sent,
without charge, to any state de
airing them for use In education
al work.
During the coming year the
book will be completely revised
and enlarged and ktters are now
being sent out to the countv as
sessors in order to got accurate
statistics on land classification in
the various parts of the state. In
that reliable figures may order
be printed as totheextentof land
timbered, tillable, untillahle. etc,
The Ontario district hopes to
make that one of the best dairy
sections in Oregon. Heretofore,
the chief emphasis has been
placed on the possibilities of fruit
growing and a bivr apple district
has been built up. Hereafter.
the chief effort will be to attract
dairyman and to induce local far
mers to keep herds of milk cows.
Letters were sent to 50,000 dairy
men throughout the country, to
$2,000 agricultural college stu
dents and to 12,00(1 butter makers
telling of the advantages offered
to dairymen by Ontario and the
surrounding country.

That Oregon can grow splen
did corn, ranking with the best
corn states of the Union is the
statement of C. L. Smith, agri
culturalist for the O.-W. K. A;
N. Company, who is arranging
a corn show to be held next fall
at Pendleton. This will be open
to corn exhibits by farmers in
every part of Oregon and another
show will be held at Colfax,
Washington, for the fanners of
that state. "Parmer" Smith de
clares that the average corn crop
per acre is larger than in Iowa,
that corn is a plant that will
adapt itself to almost any cli
mate and should be made one of
the chief items of agricultural
production here.
A use for hop vines left in the
neia alter tne crop is picKcn has
been found by an experimenter
at Tacoma, Wash. He proposes
to utilize the fiber in much the
same way that flax is used.
chemical is used to dissolve the
vegetable matter that encloses
the fibre and the latter is then
ready to be dried, carded, spun
and made into cloth. Practically
the same treatment and machin
ery can be used as in the Max
manufacture.
A Shetland pony will be an at
tractive prize in the juvenile in
dustrial contest to oe new at tne
State Fair this year. It will be
awarded to the boy or girl mak
ing the best exhibit of livestock
and is offered by the Portland
Union Stockyards Company. The
exhibit mnst consist of at least
one trio, or pen, of chickens or
ducks, two pigs and a sheep.
There will be many other prizes
for which the young farmers
may compete.

Paul, Minnesota.
With a comprehensive display
of the grains, grasses, fruits,
minerals and forest products of
the State of Montana, Idaho. Or

'0 the WOrM in St. Paul, gateway
to the great and productive
American Northwest.
This exposition of the soil
brings together faithful repre

the Northwest have produced
anil can produce. The samples
of grains and grasses have been
gathered by commercial organi
zations ami the railroads. Many
of the fine samples of grains
were brought to Minneapolis in
November by the (treat North

Minneapolis and Chicago land
shows.
No better evidence of the pro
ductive qualities, of the soil could
be had than the live and six foot
samples of wheat and oats in the
sheaf. Shelled grains are also
shown and the display of grasses
best ever assembled for exhibit
purposes, every known variety
in the Northwest being attrac
tively arranged. While the de
corations of the xhiblt room are
simple, the display has been so
arrrangod as to give the most
effective appearance.
More than 1,800 square feet of
wall and floor space have been
