An important conference at
which the whole Pacific Const
should be represented, will bo
that of the National Conference
of Charities & Corrections, to bo
held in Seattlo next July. This
gathering will take up the sub
ject of dealing with tho immigra
tion to come to this Coast upon
tho completion of the Panama
Canal.
A heayy flood of European im
migrants will bring a long list of
evils in their trail unless somo in
telligent work is dona in direct
Inn the movement, it is said
Tho aim of tho conference will bo
to do away with tho slums that
tho Atlantic Coast cities have
built up and to direct tho new
comers to tho farms and vacant
lands instead of having them
congest in the population ccn
ters. The conference will be at
tended bv men of national re
putation in philanthropic work.
Forest reserves in Oregon will
contribute a total of $-12,25'.) to
the state in 1912. Most of this
money goes to the state road
work and it is derived from the
sale of timber within tho forest
reserves, a certain percentage of
which goes to tho state in which
the reserves are located.
Orecon cheese took honors at
the recent National Dairy Show
at Chicago, winning second hon
ors in a competition with S00
samples of the cheese makers art
from all parts of the country.
This, too, in spite of the fact
that the long shipment to the
city of Chicago, took off three
mints in the score civen this
state's products which was 1)3J
out of a possible 100.
Oregon apples are invading the
far corners of the world this sea
son. A ship leaving Now York
for Buenos Ay res recently Had a
large shipment on board. This
fruit will travel 10,000 miles from
the orchard before it reaches the
consumer. A car load of Grande
Ronde Valley apples has been
sent to Norway lately. Besides,
there is the usual strong demand
from many other parts of Europe
and the Orient is also taking
fruit
The Country Life movement,
so successful last year through
out the state, whereby thousands
of school children were interest
ed in gardening contests, will be
continued this year. Poultry
raising is to be made a specialty.
Attention is called so the fact
that not less than $1,000,000 was
sent away from the state last
year to pay for the poultry and
eggs brought here and this
meney: is is held, may just as
well be kept at home.
The possibilities of broomcorn
growing in Eastern Oregon have
been made known the past week
when samples were submitted to
a Portland broom manufacturer.
It is said that 1,000 pounds of
the corn can be grown on an
acre, and as several hundred car
loads of the material are brought
into the state each year, there
seems to be a chance for farm
ers to make money growing it
here at home.
The Divining Rod
The United States Geological
Survey states in Water-Supply
Paper 255, entitled "Under
ground Waters for Farm Use,"
just reissued, that no appliance,
either mechanical or electric, has
yet been devised that will detect
water in places where plain com
mon sence and close observation
will not show its presence just
a3 well. Numerous mechanical
devices have been proposed for
detecting the presence of under
ground water, ranging in com
plexity from the simple forked
branch of witch hazel, peach or
other tree to more or less elabor
ate mechanical or electric con
trivances. Many of the opera
tors of these devices, especially
those who use the home-cut fork
ed branch, are entirely honest in
the belief that the working of
the rod is influenced by agencies
usually regarded as electric
currents following underground
streams of water that are en-1
tirely independent of their own
bodies, and many people have
implicit faith in their own and
others ability to locate under
ground water in this way. In
VHJ Xik
experiment with a rod made
fromnfnrkprlhrjinr.il it. Btnmn,l
to turn downward at certain
points independent of tho opera
tor's will, but more complete
teats flhowed that this downturn
ing resulted from slight and, un
til watched for, unconscious mus
cular action, tho effects of which
were communicated through tho
arms and wrists to tho rod. No
movement of tho rod from causes
outside of tho body could bo de
fected, and it soon became ob-
mnra-tmu" lire cicw twttt t
other men of Bclencq is correct
that tho operation of tho "divin
ing rod" is generally duo to un
conscious movements of the body
or of tho muscles of the hand.
The experiment? made show that
these movements occur most fre
quently at places where tho
operator's experionco has led him
to believe that wator may bo
found.
The uselessness of tho divining
rod is indicated by tho facts that
it may bo worked at will by the
operator, that ho fails to detect
strong water currents in tunnels
nnd other channels that nflord
no surface indications of wator,
and that his locations in lime
stone regions whero water Hows
in well-defined channels are no
more successful than thoso de
pendent on mere guess. In fact,
its operators aro successful only
in regions whero in which ground
water occurs in a definato sheet
of porous material or in moro or
less clayey deposits, such as peb
bly clay or till. In such regions
few failures can occur, for wells
can get wntcr almost anywhere.
Tho only ndvantago of employ
ing a "water witch," as tho
operator of tho divining rod is
sometimes called, is that crudely
skilled services are thus oc?a
sionly obtained, for tho men so
employed, if endowed with any
natural aptitude, become through
their experience in locating wells
shrewd, if sometimes uncons
cious observers of the occurence
and movements of ground water.

There is absolutely no excuse
to delay any longer with tho ac
tivity now manifested in rushing
the railroad work. Get in touch
with the proper officers of the
railroad system, find what they
consider will be the most feasible
and economical route from the
east and west line and thus get
co-operation which will greatly
facilitate matters. Tho railroad
wants tonnage, the northern por
tion of this Valley is sufficiently
developed to furnish it at once,
besides having the only supply of
timber within easy reach and tho
source of water for irrigation
purposes, therefore it is of mutu
al benefit and only a matter of
getting together, formulate a
working plan and accomplish the
end desired.
