LATEST DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE NOTES
(Prom Our Tortlnnd Corrciom1cnt
Portland peoplo learned a lot
from the exhibits from many
parts of tho Pacific Northwest nt
the recent land show held here.
Agricultural possibilities were
shown in a striking way and the
wealth of the soil made a strong
impression.
Tho dairy show, too, opened
tho eyes of tho city people.
They learned that tho dairy show
included dairy cattle of as high
quality as were ever assembled
in the wholo United States.
Such exhibitions arc valuable.
They show what people are doing
in the exploitation of the states's
Kreatest resources, and attract
many to these lines of activity.
Eugene, which is ono of the
most progressive cities of the
state; is keeping up its reputa
tion by starting another new
thing. This time it is a plan fcr
aworkingman's club where men
of all clnsses will feel at homo
and facilities will be provided
for pleasant recreation and iir
proyement
That the Willamette Valley
loganberry will supplant the
grape in supplying a pleasant
and refreshing drink for people
of this country is the prediction
now being made. It is planted
extensively and a great future
for this delicious fruit seems as
sured. Manufactures of Oregon form
ed a state-wide organization dur
ing a convention in portland the
past week that will, undoubtedly
be productive of much good. It
will stimulate the demand for
Oregon-made goods. To this end
the associatisn will conduct a
state-wide campaign.
Crook county won honors at
the Minneapolis Land Show, tak
ing the Northern Pacific cup for
the best display of forage plants.
As this was in direct competition
with seven northwestern states,
it is something to crow over.
Oregon farmers give a good ac
count of themselves at any show
where they enter exhibits.
Oregon Agricultural College
will have the full co-operation of
the Federal Government in its
back-to-the-farm work. Presi
dent Kerr, recently returned
from Washington, received the
assurance that funds will be
forthcoming annually for state
wide work of this character.
Oregon's activities along this
line were viewed with favor at
the capital.
Tillamook county will soon
start a new industry, the manu
facture of milk sugar from whey,
a large supply of which is avail
able at the numerous cheese fac
tories of that district. Funds
for the erection of a factory haye
been supplied.
The Oregon Purebred Live
stock Association, in session the
past week, recommends the pas
sage of the livestock sanitary
bill by the next Legislature.
This provides for the appoint
ment of a commission of five
who shall serve without salary
to check the spread of livestock
diseases.
Dry farm experts had an in
ning at the recent Land Show.
Tillman Reuter, of Madras, who
take lion's share of prizes at the
National Dry-Farming Congress
every year regularly, had his ex
hibit at Portland and other sec
tions of the state where dry
" farming is practiced, had excel
lent showings.
Bacon And Dumplings In Camp
A recipe for delicious dump
lings and bacon for camping par
ties is given in the book on
"Camp Cookery" published by
the domestic science department
of the Oregon Agricultural Col
lege. The book has proven so
popular that the first edition has
been exausted, and at present no
funds are available for a reprint,
so excerpts will bo published in
the papers from time to time.
For bacon and dumplins in
camp, put enough sliced bacon
for the party into a hot frying
pan and fry until crisp and
brown and remove. Pour in
boiling water until the pan is
half full. Make a stifr batter of
2 cups of flour, 4 teaspoons of
bacon powder, 1 tablespoon of
grease and enough water to
make it the right thickness.
Drop the batter into tho bacon
gravy by spoonfuls, coyer, and
cook well until done. Thicken
the gravy after tho dumplings
are removed with a little (lour
and water batter, and servo with
the crisp bacon,
Bacon fritters can bo made by
slicing tho bacon (or pork) and,
after soaking it in water for an
hour, rolling it in corn meal or
'flour and frying it in bacon 1
grease.
Dr. Denman Explains
Ilarriman, Ore. Nov. 25-12
Editor 'rimes-Herald;
Burns, Oregon,
Dear Sir: In your laBt issue
you grossly misrepresented my
diagnosis in the case of Richard
Hninea and I ask you to retract
tho same as it is a professional
shun either from being misin
formed or done to give mo nBlam
professionally. I pro noun cod
the wound n serious ono, but
gavo a favorable prognosis unless
infection had been carried in by
tho bullet and stated that tho
bullet entered tho plural cavity
but not tho lung as was evidenc
ed by the absence of hemorrage
from tho lungs and treated the
wound by closing nnticepticnlly
and not by drainage as this
is tho treatment of that class of
wounds ns given by tho best sur
gical authority in the world and
I will quote you Joseph D.
Bryant, Surgeon to Belloview
Hospital and Medical Collego of
New York City, who is second to
no surgeon in the United States,
who says on page 1280 of his lat
est edition on surgery "Miscel
laneous probing of a wound of
the chest should not bo practiced;
chest wounds should bo promptly
and nseptically closed at once."
1 will not Btoop to that degree
of quackery of reporting my prof
fessional work to tho nowapapcrs
as this is strictly against the
ethics of tho medical proiTession;
nor will I allow myself to be
grossly misrepresented or sland
ered .without resentment and
must ask you to print this article.
Very Respt,

Purs Bred Venus Scrubs.
The pure bred nnimal is not
one that will make good on poor
feed and care, Tho scrub will
beat the pure bred every tirno
when it comes to "rustling" its
own way, says a stock paper. But
the scrub will not and cannot
make money for its owner. And
right here is where tho purebred
excels itself.
He has the capacity which the
scrub has not. Give tho pure
bred animal good feed and care;
and he will make money and do
it quickly. At least three crops
of pure bred beef animals can be
turned out ready for market to
every two crops of scrubs or
grades.
Grades make money for their
owners sometimes, but the
amount and the quickness with
which results are obtained are in
direct proportion to the infusion
of pure blood, which makes the
grades better than Fcrubs.
