Co. office property in this city are having a septic tank installed on tho premises to be used by both residences. If this tank is a success there are likely to be several installed in the city. Tho federal court of appeals in San Francisco has decided a case involving the rights to water from Silvies but as yet The Times-Herald has not received information as to the real facts of the case. As soon as it has been received it will bo given publicity. In an opinion rendered Attor ney General Crawford holds that under the construction of the statute, initiative law goes into effect just as soon as a majority vote is cast in favor of it. Tho opinion was rendered in response to nn inquiry rom Secretary of State Olcott as to whether the woman suffrage law is now in effect. The Attorney-General says it is, and that tho canvas of tho vote and the Governor's pro clamation are only evidences of it being in effect. Tho women are going to get a vote sooner than expected in this city. Tho Mothers' Club has de cided to give a prize for the nioit beautiful lady attending their thanksviving ball next Wednes day night. Thero will also bo a prize for the handsomest man in attendance and the ladies pro sent nre to vote ns to the good looks of tho men present Tho mannger of this great religious weekly wants both Iko Schwartz and Salisbury barred and under such conditions wishes to announ ce that ho is a candidate. Died- In this city Wednesday night, Charles Kaiser, aged 52 years. Deceased was a nntivo of Germany and had resided in this section for' muny years. At one time Mr. Kaiser was in tho butcher business in this city but of rccont years he had been associated with Thos. Jenkins in tho Browery saloon, Ho has had poor health for over a year and his death was not entirely unsuspected, however, ho was ablp to bo out nt his place of bus iness for some time, Mr, Kaiser is survived by twq sistors in Permany. Tho funeral was held yesterday morning, interment heincr mndo in tho Burns ceme tery, Grant Reynolds is in tho city. J, E, Sizemoro was in the city this week on business. H. N. Geolo gical Survey is in this section looking alter and checking up tho several gaging stations on Silvies River nnd other streams of this county. The general condition of stock throughout the county is report ed good. With an abundance of feed and continued high prices Harney county stock men feel pretty good. The Times-Herald would like to have a live correspondent in the various districts who will send in the news of the commu nity from time to time. The social doings, schools, births, ac cidents, etc. that are of interest E. L. Garbor, an attache of the government Indian service, is in the city on official business. Mr. Garhcr was hero last year re ceiving the application of the Piutes who desiro to disposo of the land allotcd them nnd he is hero to receive more applications of the same nature and to look after somo other matters connect with the Indian lands. Tho change in the schedule of the stage has made it necessary to get tho films in nt an earlier dato and this will be looked after in future to tho end that tho regular pic ture programs will be given ns advertised. Newt Hoover and family nnd W. C. Sycster and family arrived hero from Buhl, Idaho, the fore part of this week and havo rent ed a houso in this city. They havo come hero to remain per mantly. Mr. Hoover was a resi dent of tho Lawen neighborhood for a number of years but went to Tennissee n fow years ago with the intention of making his homo and wns told by tho writer that ho would be back in Harney county beforo many years. The prediction was right Mr. Hoov er remained in tho south but a short timo, coming back to Idaho for a whilo then back to his former home. Mr. Sycster de sires to enter some land in this section in the spring and become a permanent rosldont. Tho bazar and dancing party given at Tonawama last night by tho domestic science department of tho county high school wa3 a decided success in every particu lar and the young ladies are re ceiving the congratulations of their mnnv friends. They had various booths where coffee, tea, cake, home made candy and ice cronm wero sold. Each of these wero presided over by young ladies appropriately costumed nnd ns the booths wero taste fully decorated was quite novel. They had more orders for fruit cakes for Thanksgiving period than they could fill. The candy was excellent Tho dance was well conducted by the young peo ple and everything passed off with the best of decorum. Buy a Farm and make it pay for itself.
