LATEST DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE NOTES
(From Our l'ortlntul Correspondent)
Under the direction of tho Ore
Ron Immigration Commission n
splendid exhibit of OroRon pro
ducts has been sent to the lnnd
shows to be hold at Minneapolis
and Chicuiro. In RatherinR the
exhibits, tho commercial bodies
holding membership in the Ore
gon Development UiRite wore
of great assistance.
For tho llrst time Oregon will
have a good showing at these
big land shows nnd the advertis
ing value of such an exhibit will
be very great Visitors to the
shows will see that Oregon can
produce and there will be com
plete information about the state.
A baggage car was filled with
the products of fields, gardens
nnd orchards, sent East, and the
different products will cause
Eastern people to wonder at the
agricultural richness of this
state.
Capturing more than 20 prizes
at the Dry Farming Congress at
Lethbridge, Alberta, Tillman
Reuter, wizard of this branch of
agriculture, returned to his home
at Madras the past week. Mr.
Reuter upheld Oregon's fame at
Lethbridge and did his part in
helping the United States win its
share of tho prizes against sharp
competition from Canadian farm
ers. Every dairyman in Oregon will
be interested in the forthcoming
Pacific International Show, to be
held in Portland Nov. 1S-23. It
is promised that the largest num
ber of strictly dairy cattle ever
shown west of St Louis will be
gathered here at that time. Cat
tle of high degree will be shown
from many par.ts of the country
and much fine stock will be put
up for sale.
That Oregon is somewhat of a
wool state is shown by the fact
one sheep produced a fleece of
6-inch staple wool weighing 28
pounds, worth almost $8. 50 This
fleece was grown in Morrow
county and has been shipped back
to the Eastern land shows as one
part of Oregon's exhibit.
Final arrangements arc being
completed for the Pacific North
west Land Products show at
Portland, November lS-2!i. So
wide is the interest in this
show that all the exhibit spaci
in the main building has been
engaged and part of the Machin
ery hall, an annex, is now being
apportioned between late entries
Everything indicates the allaii
will be a great success.
Fish planted in Oregon stream
this year numbered 37,2-17,5 H, a
very large increase over additions
to the finny tribe of any former
year in the state's history. Sal
mon, trout, bass, croppies, cat
fish, etc., were the fish liberated.

Green Feed On The Farm
"The pastures aro now begin
ning to get short, and if there Is
no other green feed available,
the farmer will notico this short
age at the milk bucket' says
Louis Sawyer of Salem in nn
article in tho current number of
the Oregon Countryman, a mon
thly magazine issued by the stu
dents of the Oregon Agricultural
College.
If a sudden change is made
from pasturage to dry feed, how
ever, Mr. Sawyer says, adecrcaso
in tho How of milk is certain, and
it may evon menu the death of
the animal, becauso of impaction
of the rumen. When it is seen
that a change is necessary, a lit
tle dry feed should bo given with
the green and increased in pro
portion from day to day until, at
tho end of two weeks or at tho
least ten days, the complete
change to dry feed has been
oU'ectcd.
"Tho Northwest farmer can
grown field of kalo with but little
expense while in other sections
the silo is tho mainstay of tho
fanner in getting green feed in
winter," he continues. "In al
most all sections the different
vnriety of roots may be grown,
which make a very good succu
lent feed.
"The succulent feeds arc essen
tial for the best milk production,
and a very good rule to follow is,
"Plan the crops so that there is
the same proportion of succulent
feed to dry the entire year.' This
may be done easily in either east
ern or western Oregon. In both
sections they have their spring
and fall pastures, and some mny
have clover all through tho sum
mer. "As a soiling crop they will
have rye and vetch for early feed,
then several plantings of oats
and vetch, then clover, alfalfa,
corn, and then they will begin to
feed the kale, corn ensilage and
roots. It is preferable to have
both the kale and ensilage, as at
times the weather mny make it
very disagreeable to gather the
kale. It is not considered safe,
too, to feed kale that has been
frozen.
"In eastern Oregon there will
be more alfalfa and less kale and
corn fed. The roots will have to
take their place in winter. Most
men prefer to have both a good
pasture and a soiling crop. They
prefer a soiling crop alone rather
than a poor pasture and a soiling
crop. In all cases some soiling
crop should he fed. especially
during the hot summer months
when the Hies are the worst
During this season the cows will
lie in the shade rather than stay
in the hot sun to pick feed.
"The amount of green feed to
be supplied will vary with the in
dividual cow. It has been found
that the cow not on green pas
ture will require about 35 pounds
of green feed daily. It will vary
with the cow, and should not be
any more than she will clean up.
"The green fields give greater
production of milk than dry be
cause while feed is curing dews,
rains and fermentation elTect
changes which lower the digesti
bility of dry feed. The fact that
masticating and passing the dry
feed through the alimentary
tractretiuire a large amount of
work'accounts, too, for the better
results from green feed, which
is more digestible. Long storage
of fodder, ever under favorable
conditions, decreases both its
digestibility and its palatibility."
This does not mean that the
cow should not have grain as well
as green feed, as a cow giving a
heavy flow can not cat enough
green feed to hold her milk
supply to the maximum with
out drawing on her surplus flesh.
Tho grain has much food in limi
ted space, and not nearly so much
non-digestible material as the
forage.
Grain ration tables in the arti
cle state that cows getting a full
supply of green feed daily should
have grain as follews: Jerseys,
Guernseys, Holsteins and Ayr-
shires giving 20 to 25 pounds of
milk a day, 3 pounds of grain
daily; those giving 30 pounds of
milk.l pounds of grain; 35 pounds
of milk, 5J pounds of grain; and
those giving 40 pounds of milk,
7 pounds of gram. For Jerseys
and Guernseys giving 50 pounds
of milk the grain ration should
bo 8 pounds, and for Holsteins
and Ayrshires with the same
yield, 9 pounds of grain a day
should be fed.
