Railroads nro co-operating to
niake the Pacific Northwest Land
Products Show, Portlnml, Nov
rfnbor 18-23, n big success. They
oftr reduced rates on nil lines
and tho low fares ennblo exhibi
tors to como n week bo f ore the
aliow opens. On exhibits of a
jHsrishablc nature on which full
tariff rates liavo boon paid, tho
railroads will refund charges
When shown that tho exhibits
were not sold. Free cold storage
facilities will bo provided for nil
exhibits.
A fair that will assemble n
comprehensive exhibit of nil tho
products grown in Eastern Ore
jfrri is being considered for
Roundup week nt Pendleton next
year. The matter has been re
garded with favor so far and it
is likely tho project will bo suc
cessful. Eastern Oregon fools
it ought to take ndvnntago of the
Roundup crowds to show its pro
ductivity. In season nt Lowiston the past
.week, tho Columbia & Snake
Rivers Waterways Association
declared for continued work on
tho Celilo Cannl until that im
provement shall be completed.
The convention will use every
means to secure the required
money from Congress.
Tillamook County, under the
lead of its chief commercial club,
hopes to establish a demonstra
tion farm, devoted exclusively to
dairying. Every farmer would
thu3 have a means near at hand
where he could learn the most
modern methods and this would
improve the output throughout
the county. If a smnll gain
should be made for each cow, tho
aggregate benefit would be very
large. A county league will pro
bably bo formed to manage the
demonstration farm.
What Is The Alfalfa Weevil?
Abnormnl Rninfnll
Weather Observer Powers of
the 0. A. C. says. "T'is Favor
able to Fall Plowing." Rainfall
for the past month of Soptomber
was 1.91 inches or .55 above
normal, "says Prof. W. L,. Pow
ers, weather observer at the
Oregon Agricultural College in
his last report
'There were 10 clear, 3 partly
cloudy and 11 cloudy days. Rain
fell on six different days during
the month. The past month the
rain has made favorable condi
tions for early fall plowing and
for growing corn and winter
kale, though it has caused pota
toes to be slow in maturing.
"The rainfall for the year end
ing September 1 was 41.0 1 inches
or 2.46 inches below normal, yet
the rainfall for the three sum
mer months was 1.90 inches
above normal. The whole sea
son has been unfavorably cold
and wet for alfalfa, causing it to
grow slowly and become weedy.
The season has been a good one
however, for clover and grass.
Thoroughbred vs. Mongrel.
Tho mongrel chicken is rarely
a paying chicken; apart from
having no pedigree to work on,
we are troubled by the lack of
uniformity in size and condition
which counts heavily in a good
market
. We mate up a pen of mongrels,
but we cannot even guess what
,we progeny will belike; wo have
all colors showing up, all sizes
and conditions of chickens; they
cat as much as a thoroughbred,
iand for our season's work wo
have nothing but mongrels; as
stock birds they are useless; they
have no power to transmit their
good qualities (even if they
possess any) to their progeny;
only by accident do we get tho
:same color again. Against this
take the pedigree thoroughbred
with its uniformity of color, size,
markings, shape, with its good
features passing on from genera
tion to generation in a straight
line. We get something to look
ai, Desiaes wo grasp a sure
thing;" with the mongrel chicken
we have to take what we get,
not what we ask for. Tho winter
egg crop can only be obtained
as a certainty by tho man han
dling pedigree layers. The sci
ence of poultry culture is now
becoming as true as that of tho
dairyman; until we thoroughly
realize this wo arc only groping
in tho dark in tho chicken busi
ness. T. Uttley in Canadian
Farmer.
Hecnuso tho alfalfa wcovil is
at present tho subject of no little
inquiry in letters to tho Oregon
Agricultural College, and becauso
of tho possible injury of which
the pest is capable, A. L. Lovott
of tho crop pest staff 1ms brought
together tho following facta re
garding tho nuisance.
Tho alfalfa wcovil occurs in
Europe, Western Asia and North
ern Africa, but is not generally
considered n serious pest thore.
It was first reported in tho Unit
ed States near Salt Lake City in
1901, but had been introduced,
probably, some timo boforo as it
was then insufllciont numbers to
injure tho crop materially. Tho
manner of introduction is wholly
theoretical. Tho habita of tho
wcovil are such that it could have
como in tho clothing or packs of
immigrants, in tho holes of nur
sery stock, or any similar mater
ial. In infected districts tho post is
proving a serious menace. It
seems capable of easily cutting
tho yield materially by its dcoro
dations, and later of rendering
tho crop entirely unprofitable.
Even in well established fields
tho crop is more or less delayed
and does not make tho growth it
should. Alfalfa is without ques
tion the fnvorito host plant
There seems to bo a slight pre
ference in favor of tho more
stocky, low-growing type. In
addition to alfalfa tho wcovil has
been observed to feed upon sweet
peas, Utah milk vetch, whitoJ
clover, red clover, alsike clover,
burr clover, yellow sweet clover,
black locust, etc
F. M. Webster thus describes
tho adult weevil: "The fully
developed alfalfa weevil is a smnll
rather insignificant appearing
beetle, slightly under one-fourth
of an inch long, of a brown color,
mixed with gray and black hairs
arranged in indistinct spoto and
stripes on tho back. Rubbed in
dividuals may be very dark verg
ing of black."
E. G. Titus thus describes the
immature stages: 'The egg is
oval, rounded at the ends and
when first deposited lemon yellow
in color. Three of them laid end
to end would about reach across
an ordinary pin-head. When
first hatched the larvae is a little
larger in diameter than a coarse
thread and about as long across
as an ordinary pin-head. It is
pale, dirty yellow at first, with a
head somewhat darker and with
very minute black spots showing
on tho body.
"With the third molt, or cast
ing of the skin, the larvao becomes
still darker green, the line on
the back almost puro white, and
there is a faint indication of a
white line on either side. The
face shows the characteristic
black that so readily distinguish
es this species from any other
larvae in tho alfalfa fields. The
largest larvae are but a trifle
over a quarter of an inch long
and one-third as wide.
"Then full grown the larvae
either crawl or drop to tho ground
and spin a cocoon in tho dead
leaves or other rubbish present.
The cocoon is globular, composed
of a rather coarse network of
pure white threads large enough
for the larvae to lie in a slightly
curved position. Tho pupa or
resting stage is at first palo green
As it advances toward tho beetle
stage it becomes darker and tho
legs and other parts of tho body
are more readily recognized."
The remedial measures are as
yet in the experimental stage,
The pest is sufficiently important
to warrant careful watch being
kept jor it and in case suspicious
individuals are found they should
bo sent at once to the college for
identification.
Tho weevil passes tho winter
as an adult, hibernating in shel
tered nooks about tho field.
Matted grass in fence corners.
rubbish and clods and oven the
crowns of alfalfa plants furnish
excellent quarters. In early
spnng they emerge and spread
over the fields, and commenco
feeding on the earlier buds and
shoots. About this timo they
begin pairing, and tho femalo
are ready to deposit eggs soon.
In Utah this is early in March,
but depends largely on iho sea'
son, sometimes being delayed un
til April. The eggs aro usually
laid on alfalfa stems.
PRACTICAL METHODS THE ONLY SUCCESS
(Concluded t'loiu l'lut t'ltgc)
being dono by the Slate Agricult
ural College and help tho instit
ution in Increasing its Hcope.
Tho introduction of proficient and
practical methods of agriculture
is tho greatest need. This movo
ment should receive substantial
encouragement from nil tho peo
ple." Following Mr. Miller's address
tho Reality Hoard voted to ar
range for an excursion to Cor
vnllls foV tho purpose of' investi
gating tho work being dono by
tho college. It is expected thnt
tho trip will bo taken some timo
this month.
An invitation was extended to
tho members of tho Hoard to at
tend a mooting at Seattle, Octo
bor, 10, when there will bo or
ganized a stato association of tho
realty men. It was announced
that several Portland dealers will
attend tho meeting.
