PROGRESS AT BURNS EXPERIMENT FARM Continued From Firt Fngc) even with ns much moisture nS wohnvolmd while the thinner Bowing has n vigorous Rrowth and bids fnir to make a eooii crop. The end rows, whero nn ally way of some three or more feet la left between each variety, Bhow much better as these rows havo ati opportunity to thaw moiBturc from this source, thus an advantage U trained. The same is demonstrated on th other crops, such as Held peas alfalfa, potatoes and other vege tables. Sunt. Rruithaupt has started the lawn around the dwellings and has a variety of garden vege tables started near the house which he is giving care. The vegetables are given a similar test to the field crops and are varied as to kind and methods of planting and cultivation. It is very interesting to go over the work with Mr. Breith- aunt and not first handed exper iencc. Ho will prove even this year that certain varieties are better adapted to conditions here and how and when they should bo planted. This is valuable in formation to the farmers of tho county and will prove of great advantage this year. It will not be long until the demonstration farm will be tho center of at traction in this country and our farmers realize what a great thintr it will do toward the de velopment of this biy territory. IN THE GARDEN No. of varieties: Turnips -l, Salsify 2, Radishes 5, Parsnips !, Onions 6, Lettuce, 3, Kohl Kabi 2, Kale 2, Carrots 5, Cabbage 1), Sugar Beets 2, Mangels 3, Ked Beets 3. Artichokes, Manchu Brown Kowliang, Flax, Broom Corn Millet (Red and White) Proso, (Black and White) Kurst, Sorgo, (White) Durra, (White.) Corn : Minnesota 23, Minne sota 13, and five other varieties. Notes by Supt Breithaupt on general conditions and future de velopments are given as follews: The precipitation was sufficient to wet the sod down to a depth of about two feet whero the sum mer fallow methods were used. The land under summer fallow is generally wot to a depth of two feet in some places it is even wet all the way on account of the capillary rise of moisture from below under which is a layer of dry soil varying in thick ness from a few inches to sever al feet, and under this layer of dry soil, wet soil is to bo again found. There is a good chance that, where tho summer fallow is kept well mulched, by next spring, thoro will bo no underlying layer of dry soil. Tho moisturo that will come this next winter, added to that being held in the soil by tho summer fallow, will probably be sufficient to drive the top moisture down to tho lower mois ture. Where tho summor fallow is not being kept well mulched with the harrow there is, already a distinct difference in the amount of moisturo in the soil. Thoro aro some experiments being car ried on to illustrate this. THE FOURTH OF JULY AT CROW CAMP (Continued from pago 1.) pluck of tho new comer, who can't be bluffed by an old timer he asked for tho book and read it unusually well. Then camo tho girls with cher ries for all and after that we spread a dinner in the grove un der which tho tables fairly groaned. Tho cream was served with the cake and then candy. Some lamented that they couldn't eat more, but moro re gretted having eaten so rnuchr Twenty gallons of lemonade was made after dinner. . Next came many amusing races and contests in which men women and children participated. Fifty cents wero given tho win ner of each contest. The crowd, among whom wero many new people, caught the spirit of tho day, soon becamo iv quainted and thoroughly en ji d themfiolvcB in a social wny. A small collection wob taken up, among tho men folks, which d d not exceed 75 cents each, to il. fray actual cost of lemons ice . nd races. All wore invited to stay for u house party and many of the merry makers stayed but as I was unablo to stay can give no account of the party which could not havo been other than a suc cess. It will pay to do il for a prize t-f $5,000 is offered by tho N' r invest de partment League lor the best five bushels exhibited at the Minneapolis Land Show in Nov ember. With the splendid grain crop assured for Oregon, thin state Hhould havo any quantity of first class wheat to enter at this show. Commercial bodies of the state aro showing nn interest in the collection of Oregon exhibits to be shown this winter at tho land shows of the Middlo West. In response to a call sent out by Manager Chapman of tho Oregon Development League, many out side societies havo been heard from, each promising to collect samples of the best products grown there this season and it seems a good collection is assur ed. No locality should allow itself to bo unrepresented. Portland is ablaze with lights and streaming banners of purple and white this week in honor of tho grand reunion of tho Elks. Thousands of visitors from all parts of tho country are here, and to many of tho delegates, this is their first introduction to tho Pacific Coast. Oregon lodges nre co-operating heartily to wel come their visiting brothers from the Eastern states. Moored in Portland harbor is the famous old fighting machine, the battleship Oregon. For the first time in its long and event ful history, it is visiting its own state. Its arrival arousal great interest and lu crowds have been visiting this sturdy old fighter. Sherman County fmrneis have come to appreciate their experi ment farm, located at Moro. Many at first doubled iti utility but much valuable help has been given in conducting inquiries in to better methods of agriculture that they aro now thoroughly interested. A recent fanner's day brought hundreds of visitors to the station. NOTICE TO CREDITORS. lit the nintlcr of the lUtntc of Smiiucl I'. Ho advocated that es tablishment of a dumonstsntion farm in each county under com petent supervisions, the superin tendent to act as advisor to the farmers of his district, and to assist in the formation of rural organization for tho improve ment of educational, social and financial conditions. "In many foreign countries the value of demonstration farms and special agricultural educa tional work is strongly in evi dence," said Dr. Withycombe. "Tho littlo country of Denmark has made phenomenal agricul tural progress under the system of demonstration instruction. With nn area equal to but one sixth of Oregon Denmark sup ports 2,G90,000 pcoplo and ox- pors annually over $100,000,000 worth of butter, eggs and bacon. This is accomplished under ad verse agricultural conditions, much of the country being so bleak that it is necessary to blanket tho cows in pasture to keep them comfortable in sum mer. "If such results can be secur ed under such unfavorable con ditions, what results might we not justlyexpect from a similar system here in Oregon where conditions for dairying and gen eral farming arc so favorable?
