l TO VIEW
CENTRAL OREGON
(Portland Correspondent.)
Tho most extcnaivo "Socimr
Oregon" trip over undertaken
from Portlnnd will bo the bij? ex
cursion to Lakeview next August.
Business men of the metropolis
will go by automobiles, covering
about 2,000 miles Alternate
routes will bo taken going and
coming, so that an immense ana
of tho state will be covered.
At Lakeview the Central Ore
gon Development League will be
In session August 20, 21 and 22,
and the journey will cover ten
days. Some will go by train to
Bend and motor southward to
Lakeview. following dill'crenl
routes. Returning, tho Klamath
country and Crater Lake will be
visited and delegates from Port
land will take tho train at Bend
for horned
Secretary C. C. Chapman, of
the Oregon Development League,
is making plans for tho trip and
those who go will have a better
knowledge of interior Oregon
than ever before.
The first great dairy show over
held west of the Rocky Mount
ains is sccduled for Portland
November 18-23. It is oflicercd
by prominent dairymen and live
stock growers of the West, with
an advisory committee represent
ing many eastern states as well.
From present indications, there
will be tho greatest display of
dairy stock, dairy products and
dairy machinery ever assembled
on the Pacific Slope. There will
also be a big sale of dairy cattle
at the show and the executive
committee has adopted the rule
that everything offered for sale
must be guaranteed against
tuberculosis for three months
after the sale.
Oregon has a good chance to
win the national prize for advance
in earth education this year.
The state committee has under
way an exhibit showing how
75,000 boys and girls of the state
have been interested in the new
competitive gardening contests
and how 10,000 Portland School
children were enlisted in similar
work in this city alone. Perhaps
no other state ever gave such
liberal support to this movement
at the outset. The next step, it
is expected, will bo to make this
industrial education an integral
part of the state school system.
For the first time in its history
the famous battleship Oregon is
to visit its own state. During
the Elks reunion, in July, the
historic old fighting, ship will be
brought to Portland harbor,
where it will be much admired
by all loyal Oregonians. Naval
officials have at last given their
consent to the request that the
Oregon be brought here.
LET PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT IT.
A merchant may have an ideal
stock of goods, selected with
good judgment, offered at low
profits, but if he docs not take
pains to tell the people about it,
few will remember that lie is do
ing business when they have any
thing to buy.
On the other hand, a merchant
may select his stock with poor
judgment and he may ask for an
inordinate profit for himself.
But if ho talks about his goods
persistently he will interest peo
ple in them, and 'his store will be
thronged with buyers.
This is no day for hiding your
light under the bushel of business
reticence. People don't seek out
things that hide away out of
sight They have to be sought
out. The initiative must always
be taken by tho man who has
goods to sell.
An advertisement giving your
name, place of business and a
few general facts about your line
will bo useful. It will remind
people of your existence, and the
impression will turn the foot
steps of a good many to your
store.
Tho advertisement can bo made
infinitely more eiTective.however,
by taking a few definite leaders
and concentrating attention on
them. Describe them just as
you would to a buyer in your
store, and name the price. You
can't fail to interest tho people.
-Ex.
When your child has whooping
cough be careful to keep the
cough loose and expectoration
easy by giving Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy as may bo requir
ed. This remedy will also liquify
tho tough mucus and make it
easier to "expectorate. It has
been used successfully in many
epidemics and is safo und sure.

Time for Harvesting Oats.
Oats should bo cut when tho
grain is in tho dough stage. If
cut when tho grain is in tho
milk tho grain will bo light in
weight, and if cut when full ripe
thoio will ho a loss of grain in
h nulling, nays a writer. Wo en
d 'aver to cut when the milk is
out of tho grain. Tho crop is
cut with self binder, making small
sheaves.
Twolvo sheaves are set to a
siiock, and ai soon as the straw
i;i cured and the grain hard and
dry, wo haul in as quickly as
possible. Tho crop should bo
hauled in before a heavy rain, as
it is almost impossiblo to dry the
bundles if tho straw is onco
thoroughly wet, It is a hard
task to take down the shocks,
open out the bundles and sprend
out the sheaves to dry.
Owing to tho soft straw and
cIialT around tho grain, tho mois
ture dries out slowly, even when
the weather is hot and dry.
Grain and labor are saved by
getting the crop under cover bo
fore showers.
After the sheaves are hauled
in tho field should bo raked.
These rakings cut fine and mix
ed with a little milfecd make an
excellent summer feed for tho
horses. As soon as tho oats are
under cover the field should be
cut over with tho twe-horse sulky
cultivator or the steel disk. Run
the cultivator both ways. This
early work brings the dry seed
to the surface; it also prevents
the soil from crusting over.
TEACHERS' INTEREST IN
RURAL PROBLEMS
(Continued from page 1.)
the attention of the pupils to
methods of reducing the great
cost of marketing the products
of tho farm. This would be a
great benefit to the producer nnd
tho consumer as well, in the next
generation.
"Since agriculture is our great
l,asic industry, this work should
bo emphasized in all our public
schools. Of necessity 00 per
cent of our population must
choose industrial occupations. In
a state like Oregon, agriculture
is the great field of opportunity."
It would surprise you to know
of the great good that is being
done by Chamberlain's Tablets.
Darius Downey, of Ncwbcrg
Junction, N. B., wrjtcs, "My
wife has been using Chamber
lain's Tablets and finds them
very effectual and doing her lots
of goods." If you have any trou
ble with your stomach or bowels
