BHI CROrS SPELL PROSrERITV,
(Portlnnd Correspondent)
Bumper crops nnd prcvnUitiK
,gooUpriccs arc expected to put
the farmers of tho Pacific North
west in high good humor this
fall and. through him, tho thleo
states are expected to prosper as
never bofore. Evory indication
is for big yields in nil tho staple
products nnd forsomo prices will
be very lush.
The biggest vhont crop over
harvested is predicted fr Ore
gon, Washington and Idaho nnd
it is thought tho yield will reach
70,000,000 bushol3, worth $52,
500.000. Oats nro expected to
add S18.676.000 moro. Fruit
marketed this fall and winter
will add $15,000,000 to this new
wealth and hay the neat sum of
$35,890,000. The wool crop is
estimated to be worth $G, GOO, 000,
and hops $4,650,000. This is a
total income for the producers of
the three states of almost $150,
000.000. If the manufactured
products were added to tho weal
th of the soil, it is probable the
total would fall not far below
$500,000,000 for the year.
Indicating the desire of the
railway company to stimulate the
livestock industry in every possi.
ble way, the O-W. R. & N. Co,
has just named D. E. Clark live
Btock agent This is a new posi
tion and he will give his time to
aiding the stockmen of the state
to grow more and better horses,
cattle sheep and hogs.
Now that the three year home
. stead bill seems certain to be:ome
a law, interest is bning aroused
anew in Oregon's vacant lands.
Statistics have been gathered
from the records of the General
Land Ofiice showing there is lots
of room in this state for the home
steader, there being 15,959,377
acres still unappropriated. This
is a little more than one-quarter
of the state's area. Every coun
ty in the state has its quota and
while most of the land is far
from the larger towns, much of
it is fertile and will be productive
when tilled.
Oregon has an opportunity to
attract settlers from the Middle
West by making a good exhibit
at the Northwestern Products
"Exposition at Minneapolis, Nov
ember 12-25, according to Will
A Campbell, secretary, who has
lately visited Portland. There is
nothing so convincing as an
actual exhibit of what a state
can produce, he says, to win set
tiers. Such a demonstration is
held to be more forceful than
any amount of advertising or
any other form of exploitation.
Oregon will have a delegation
in attendance at the Northwest
ern Development League Con
gress at Seattle, June 5, 6, 7 and
8. Representatives have been
named by the Governor and Ore
gon speakers have been given
places on the program. Subjects
of interest to the whole North
west will be discussed.
Orders for approximately 50,
000,000 feet have been placed
with mills of Oregon and Wash
ington to supply material for new
equipment for the Harriman
lines in this territory. The traf
fic officials are preparing for the
new crop season by ordering
8,200 box cars and 5G cabooses
to be distributed over the Union
Pacific, 0.-"W. R. & N., Southern
Pacific and Oregon Short Line,
roads.
A MATTER OF NEWS.
The local United States Lard
Office is just in receipt of regu
lations under the new act passed
by Congress on March 28, 1912,
regading public sales of land.
Section 2-155 of the United States
Revised Statutes has heretofore
authorized the Commissioner of
the General Land Office, in his
discription, to order into market
and sell isolated tracts not ex
ceeding 1G0 acres, at not less
than $1.25 per acre. Under the
Departmental regulations, how
ever a tract was not considered
ered "isolated" until all the sur
rounding lands were disposed of
or entered for at least 2 years.
The new law amends this section
by adding this proviso, "provid
ed, that any legal subdivision of
the public land, not exceeding
one-quarter section, the greater
part of which is mountainous or
too rough for cultivation, may,
in tho discretion of said Com
missioner, be ordered into the
market and ol J pursuant to this
act upon tho application of any
person who owns lands or holds
a valid entry of lands adjoining
such tract, regardless of tho fact
that such tracts may not bo iso
lated or disconnected within tho
meaning of this act."
