MJlRYELOUS MUSICAL ABILITY.
(Continued from pngo 1.)
witji further training, wo pio
dict n brilliant future and prom
ising position in the world of
music nt some near future date,
for this accomplished little lady.
Thn stage scenery was arrang
ed in an artistic manner and har
monized attractively as n hack
ground for the beautiful (lowers
-which wcro in evidonee for the
occasion and mingled with the
fragrant odor of tho lilacs and
apple blossoms etc. which scented
the entire hall, it lent a most re
freshing and inspiring ntmos
phero to all present.
Among those who assisted in
tho program with tho violin were
the Misses Viola liichardson,
Agnes Foley, Violet liar key.
Kathleen Jordan, James Walkup
and Milton Brown. At tho piano
were Juno Dalton, Woodhridge
Geary, Nora Martin, Miriam
McConnoll, Gwendolen Lamp-
shire. William McIIose, Violet
Tcrrill, Dowcy Robinson. The
classos were assisted by Nathan
Brown and Evelyn Byrd on the
piano and Charles Foley, cornet.
All distinguished themselves and
executed their respective parts
in a pleasing and modest manner.
Miss Hazel Cozad sang two
very pleasing songs, which were
well received, and rendered in a
most impressive way.
Messrs Ludwig Johnson, Wal
do Geer and Allan Biggs each
sang tneir songs in a manner
most delightful to the audience
and were heartily encored after
each number.
In conclusion we trust that the
splendid work thus accomplished
and that under way, will be
merely the stepping stones for
our little performers, and that
they will receive every encour
agement and assistance possible
as their work and advancement
largely depends on the encourage
ment received alike from public
and parents we say, its noble
and grand, keep it up, the results
will be better men and women,
and happier homes for all con
cerned. Socialists Nominate Ticket
The socialists of Harney coun
ty held a mass convention at the
court house in this city last Wed
nesday forenoon and nominated

resolutions a copy of which is
published belew:
We, the Socialist party of Har
ney county, in mass convention
assembled hereby affirm our sup
port of the principles of Socialism
as expressed in the National
platform of the Socialist party.
We are unalterably opposed to
"the present economic system
which gives to the few who do
not toil far the greater part of
the wealth that is created and
gives those who do the world's
work only a bare subsistence.
In as much as our party candi
dates for county and district offi
ces will place their signed resig
nation in the hands of the party
organization, we state emphatic
ally that we will place in effect
the resignation of any such can
didate who, after election, fails
to do his duty as an officer or
who fails to keep his pre-election
pledges.
That our qandidate for com
missioner be pledged to oppose
the appropriation of any unusual
ly large amount of money until
tho matter has been refered to
and approved by, the people of
the county.
We are opposed to any action
to abridge the rights of free
speech and a free press.

STATE INDUSTRIAL NOTES
(Portland Correspondent.)
Banks of the state continuo to
grow, reflecting tho continued
prosperity of all Oregon. Ac
cording to the report of Will'
Wright, Buperintondontof banks,
deposits havo increased from
$114,339,473, on March 7, 1911,
to $127,130,997 on April 18 of this
yenr, a gain of $12,797,524, or
moro than a million dollars n
month during tho year.
Land offices report n great deal
of inquiry for vacant land in this
stnto and it is expected that 1912
will ho notnble for tho largo
iroaB of tho Government domain
to he taken by sottlers. Tho
luingp in tho land laws, allowing
t losidencoof threo years on a
homestead preliminary to m:tl -
i lg proof, which has passed both
houses of Congress nnd waits
only tho signature of tho presi
dent, is making public lands
more nttrnctivo than ever before
to tho settler.
Portland people are discover
ing Oregon. During tho past
week an excursion wns run into
tho Tillamook country that was
.in eye-opener to tho 100 partici
pants. Only n small part of tho
crowd had over been to Tilla
mook boforo and they came
back to Portland singing tho
praises of that favored section.
As Portland people become bet
ter acquainted with tho rest of
tho state and learn that every
thing they have comes from this
outside territory, it will be bet
ter for all concerned.
Russian Speltz, or Emmcr, a
grain that thrives on the sreppes
of Russia, is expecting to find a
congenial homo in tho dry-farming
country of Eastern Oregon.
Umatilla County farmers are to
introduce it experimentally this
year. It resembles both oats
and barley and requires but little
moisture to make tho crop. It
has shown good results in North
Dakota and will probably do well
on light lands of the interior.
Commercial organizations will
co-operate with state authorities
to secure the passage of a strin
gent "Blue-Sky" law that is ex
pected to curb wildcat realcstate
operators. Tho proposed mea
sure will provide penalties for
false statements in advertising.
Each ago of our lives has its
iovs. Old Deonle should be nan
ny, and they will be if Chamber-1
Iain's Tablets are taken to stren-'
ghten tho digestion and keep the!
bowels reKUlar. These taolets
are mild and gentle in their ac-
tion and especially suitable for
people of middle age and older.
