The proper agency for taking it into consideration and recom mending it to the county court would most likely ho the Com mercial Club, which consists of the most spirited men we ha o in n body. This is what 1 under stand in part, as internal up building, and it moans to us all more money for improvements and general circulation. Paul Lochkk. oettinq rid op plant lico. Plant lice are playing havoc with rose bushes, currants and various garden crops at this sea son, and A. L. Lovetr, assistant enomologist at the Oregon Agri cultural College, has prepared directions for recognizing and getting rid of the pest. On currant bushes the work of the lice at present appears as ir regular galls on the leaves, dis colored a deep reddish hue. On the underside of the leaf are found many small, pale green, soft-bodied insects with their beaks inserted in the plant tissue, busy sapping the plant juices. On the roses the lice are found about the stems of the leaf and flower buds. Later the flowers will be misshapen and smaller than normal. A contact spray should be used, and its effectiveness de pends entirely on its being used thoroughly in such a way that it actually reaches the body of the insect, "Black Leaf 40", a com mercial preparation for sale in all railroad towns, is perhaps the best for lice. Directions are on the can. It may also be used diluted in 800 parts of water, with half a pound of soap added for every ten gallons of the solu tion. Whale oil soap is best, but common laundry soap will do. It should be shaved find ard dis solved in hot water first. Another solution is the kero sene emulsion spray. Half a pound of hard soap is disolved in a gallon of boiling water, and when removed from the fire two gallons of kerosene is stirred in. A hand pump is best for mixing it, the solution being drawn through the hose and back into the container again until it is a creamy white. After diluting it with fifteen gallons of water, the plants should be wet with it, especial care being taken to reach the under sides of the leaves, where the lice are found. INDUSTRIAL NOTES. When big timbers are wanted, Oregon forests are called upon to supply thern. Two big spars, 70 feet long and 2G inches in diameter, are now wanted to complete a dredge on the Panama Canal and the Washington offi cials directing the work have asked Oregon timberman to fur nish them. Commercial Clubs of the Ore gon Development League have taken an active part in the good roads campaign during the past1 weeks-, when signatures lor good roads bills petitions were secured. They enrolled many signers, thus helping with the good work and it is believed the required 60,000 signatures will be listed. Five thousand dollars for five bushels of wheat is the value of the prize offered by the North west Development League this year. This is the world's biggest prize for wheat and is said to be five times as much as was ever offered for any class of prize grain in the United States. The wheat is to be displayed at the Northwest Products Exposition, Minneapolis, Nov. 12-23. No entry fee will be charged. The prize consists of a traction en gine and set of plo Presidential po masters of Oregon, Washington and Idaho will w -tin Portland June 11, 12, 13 " P.Granfield, First " j.jtmaster General, win " ,i .'jnt. . ANOH EH LIVE WIRG FOR ONTARIO. Joe Williams, whom the writer first met on Silver creek in the Harney country in the early 80's, has sold his land and stock in the interior country and cast his lot in Ontario, the future Kreat city of the Inland Empire. Joe has become a member of the new mercantile corporation of Reynolds, Williams & Co , and in addition to hit. other real i tiro holdings linrct- . acquired is investing in sevt jv. choice pieces of city property, and rapidly be coming one of Ontario's substan tial taxpajers. Mr. Williams is one of that substantial class of citizens that every community is glad to wel come. Ho is not a plunger nor n sky-rocket investor, but just a plain pioneer, who has mndo goctl by doing the right thing by everybody ho dealt with, and be i g the same Joo Williams, yea-t-rday, today and tomorrow. He will make good as a merchant, just as he did as a rancher and stockman, not because he is a s'irowd financier, but because ho i s right with his fellow man. (ntario Democrat. SUNSET NOTES- Wm. Hnnley and Prof. Scudder were Sunset guests last Saturday. A mass meeting was held at the school house at 10 a. m. Mr. Hanley made a few well chosen remarks, and then introduced Professor Scudder who had the undivided attention of our farm ers for two hours. Among other things the professor told us, he believed wo had n splendid vally, that would produce good crops when farmed properly. Our farmers feel that the professor's lecture did us more good than 2 inches additional rainfall. This has been spud week in Sunset. Little Nellie Barron, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Barron, hns been very sick with pneumonia and under the care of Dr. Griffith She is reported much better and on the road to recovery. E. C. Eggleston is summor fal lowing five ncres, to be planted to alfalfa next spring and culti vated and farmed according to the direction of our experiment al farmer. Nat Hcnney has been suggest ed as another good man to take charge of our sub-station. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Beery ar rived from Seattle this week. Mr. Beery owns a farm here and will commence improving it at once. He has a power pump and other machinery. Sunset is glad to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Beery home. Mr. and Mrs. W. Baker, are among our arrivals this week. They also have one of our fine ranches and will add another progressive family to Sunset A Mr. Busbee who has a claim in Dog Mountain basin, is here and will reside on his place this summer. Sunset Grange is already mak ing preparations for the big joint Grange picnic, July 4. Harry Eager is putting a good fence around his desert claim and clearing brush. Harry is a worker and we predict he will have a farm as he has good land and ambition. Sunset is busier than it has been for some years. We are finding we can grow things, if we farm right There never was a time when people appreciated the real merits of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy more than now. This is shown by the increase in sales and vol untary testimonials from persons who have been cured by it.
