This advice should bo heeded by the farmers and it was gratifying to noto thoy hnve taken kindly to the siiKKcation and many will prepare the ground for such purpose. It ia the intention of Supt. Breithaupt of the station here to co-oporato with the farmers. in each neighborhood, making fitj- qucnt visits to them and suponv tending the work on small pin's thfttwillbe uYvohd In tarnuus, for the purpose. It was explain ed that alkali is not a drawback to some sections as it does harm only when allowed to concentrate. Deep plowing disturbs this, scat tering it through tho soil and thus prevents its damage to any great extent By constant culti tation and prevention of water standing on the surface in nlkali spots will do much toward the reclaiming of such land. Prof. Scudder made the asser tion that thousands of acres of our best dry farming land had been left untouched tho foot hill lands. This is free from alka li and is a very rich soil that will retain moisture well with proper cultivation. This land is prefera ble to the low lands near the lake where the water washes the alka li and the water level is so close to the surface as to make crops uncertain. He recommends "a crop of tile" for such a territory and farm the higher ground un til such a time as the low lands have been properly drained. The meeting at Harriman was most profitable after Prof. Scud der had made his talk and the farmers were invited to ask him questions. It was then that per sonal experiences were related and information given to fit each individual. Every man was giv en a practical suggestion respect ing such mistakes as he had made. The crowd at Law-en was not so large as at Harriman but all were well paid for their atten dance. Prof. Scudder talked to the school children in the fore noon and suggested they visit the experiment farm. He promised every child some seed to plant and told them how to care for a little plot of ground. The child ren showed deep interest. The afternoon meeting was de voted to both dry farm and irri gation methods. Prof. Scudder gave the irrigationist a practical talk on the abuse of water and showed them the real harm they were doing the land by hav ing it flooded for long periods. His argument was practical and one that creates a stronger senti ment in favor of the Silvies irri gation project. This is as neces sary as the dry fanning methods taught at the experiment farm in fact of more importance at this particular time as the flood water is ruining some of the best land in Harney Valley. Prof. Scudder addressed a large crowd at the court house Tuesday evening and much of this was devoted to the misuse of water. In company with Wm. Hanley Prof. Scudder viMttd the Catlow valley section and on his return talked to the people at Narrows and Sunset. Tomorrow afternoon a meeting will be held at the experiment farm, another tit Drewsey Mon day at noon and at Harney Mon day evening at 8 o'clock. Prof. Scudder expects to re turn to this county some time in June and will again make a tour of the territory and give his assistance to the farmers. BUTTERMAK1M ON THE FAK.M. (Continued from page 1.) at the sr.me time hiding it at 70 degr. i The best cream for chur. ' is that which tests about iiirty per cent fat after tho st ti hi. 3 been added. TIk u mpc-rature at which the cream should bo churned depends on size of fat globules, hardness of fat globules, age of cream, amount of cream, percentage of fat in croam. kind of feed the cow is getting, and this can not be determined except by trial, Thirty-five degrees may be pro per on one farm and CO degrees on the one adjoining. A good rule to follow is to have the butter come about the size of wheat kernels in about thirty to forty minutes. If it takes longer the croam is either too sweet or at too low a ttmpc-iature, or the churn is too full. If it como sooner than thirty minutes, the temperature is too high. Wi,i in j..."ir,..les are about jiit, ... a buttermjlk shoula bi- ui, lined, tho granules washed and the salt added, Then thy are worked together, only ,'i to distribute the salt evenly. When the ehurn is not stopped until tho granules be come largo, some of tho butter milk is encased and it makes butter of poor keeping quality. Mottles in butter are caused by in uneven distribution of salt in the presonco of buttermilk. INDUSTRIAL NOTES. Seven Governors of Northwest stites have joined in issuing a nwlnmation callinir a North- western Development Congress to Iml,t al Seattle Juno fi to H. y, 8tat,.s 0f Oregon, Washinv,- t01, Miimosotn. North Dakota. South Dakota, Montana and Idaho arc represented in the call and these will all have represen tatives at tho Congress. Tho chief purpose of the con ferenco is to plan a campaign for tho more rapid development of tho states interested and suggest ways and means to stem tho tide of emigration from the Americnn Northwest to Canada: An ela borate program for the gather' ing has been prepared and in ad. dition to Governor West, C. C, Chapman, Secretary of tho Ore gon Development League, Carl It. Gray, president of the Spo kane, Portland & Seattle Rail way, and "Bill" Hnnley are Ore gonians who will deliver ad dresses. Eastern Oregon and the Inland Empire country report that re cent heavy rains have brought millions to tho farmers of that section of the northwest by soak ing the soil and bringing the needed moisture to grain and fruit crops. It is declared that never before were crop conditions so favorable for a record produc tion. Bankers of Bend, following a somewhat similar plan used last year to develop the hog industry in that section, hnve bought and shipped to Bend a carload of thoroughbred Holstein milch cows from the famous dairy dis trict of Elgin, 111. The bankers will dispose of the cows to fann ers, taking their notes in pay ment if desired. The farmers will dispose of their cream ton new creamery just started. Medford has set the pace for other Oregon communities. Re cently a carload of eggs was shipped from that point, the first consignment of that size ever sent from there. This points the way to a great industry, both there and in other sections of the state, for there is no part of Ore gon where the poultry business cannot be conducted successfully. Traversing 24 states from the Pacific to the Atlantic, the origi nal Great Northern Railway ex hibit car, carrying Oregon pro ducts, recently reached St. Paul on its return journey, having actually traveled more than 30, 000 miles, or more than a com plete trip around the world. This car spread the fame of Ore gon's agricultural products very widely, visiting 732 cities and towns and exhibiting Oregon's fruits, grains and vegetables to 1,. 110, 607 people. There never was a time when people appreciated the real merits of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy more than now. This is shown by the increase in sales and vol untary testimonials from persons who have been cured by it. If you or your children are troubled with a cough or cold give it a trial and become acquainted with its good qualities. For sale by all dealers. Three room cottage and barn for rent.
