BOOST FOR TONAWAMA BAND
(Continued from page 1.)
How well wc remember him ami
the happy tunes of yore.
Life is work ami pleasure. If
a town has no provision for plea
sure, it is n poor place to work, a
poor place to live and do business
ina bad place to got into.
Population never Hocks to dead
towns. Real cstato values novi r
rise in dead towns. People never
speak well of dead towns. Ro
member, live people want to live
in live towns, and if you want to
got to the live ones, and land
them with you show them you
are one of their class.
But the town with a band the
bigger the better-that's whore
progress leaves its footprints;
where people are happy, whero
monotony never palls, where
everybody boosts, are happy and
living in harmony, and where
they do things that makes every
one notice they are alive to
their own interests and believe
in progress and goodfellowship,
which tends to upbuild and ele
vate the town, county and state
all in one. Let's have a ' 'Band
in Burns?"
INDUSTRIAL NOTES.
(Portland Correspondent)
Pupils of tha Portland schools
have taken up Country Life edu
cation in earnest and during the
past week the work was given
new impetus when instructors
of the Oregon Agricultural Col
lege talked to the children on this
interesting subject. One city
school alone has 1130 gardens
now being grown by pupils.
The current year, it is said,
will prove one of the best periods
in the history of the lumber in
dustry, the demand for forest
products of Oregon being the
best since the period following
the San Francisco fire, when the
forests of the Northwest were
drawn upon heavily to rebuild
that city. Prosporou3 conditions
in the lumber trade will be felt
generally throughout Qregon, so
widespread is this industry.
Preliminary work for the con
struction of the north Jetty at
the mouth of the Columbia River
will commence at once, plans
having been approved at Wash
ington and forwarded to the
local engineeis during the past
week. The approximate length
of the proposed jetty will be two
and one-half miles and it will re
quire about five years for con
struction. It is expected to add
materially to the depth of the
ship channel across the Columbia
River bar.
Two new experiment farms
have just been completed in Crook
County, one near Metolius and
the other near Redmond. They
are to be operated under the
direction of the Oregon Agricul
tural College, which is sufficient
guarantee that they will be oper
ated on a practical basis and it
is believed they will do much to
ward solving the problems new
settlers are meeting with in till
ing the dry farming and irrigat"
ed lands of the interior of the
state.
Extensive displays of state pro
ducts will undoubtedly be ar
ranged at Portland during the
Rose Festival, Elks Convention
and other gatherings of the com
ing summer. The thousands of
visitors to the Rose City during
the year will thus be able to get
a comprehensive knowledge of
Oregon's resources and the ad
vertising will be of great value
to the state.
The Oregon Threshers Associ
ation will meet at Condon May
23 and 24. This organization
has members all over the state
and' the annual meeting is usually
largely attended. Subjects of
interest to threshermen are dis
cussed and various problems
met.
SHORTEN BUfiNS-BEND ROAD.
The route from here to Burns
has been shortened three miles,
according to reports from Hamp
ton. A new road has been open
ed through tho valley by settlers,
with tho aid of the road machine
of A. T. Frame. Tho new route
is by Lizzard Creek where there
is an abundance of water the
year round.
All the sagebrush has been re
moved and tho rough places
smoothed, giving a highway as
level as a pool table," writes
one of the homesteaders.
In addition to Mr. Frame, Mr.
Riggs, Mr. Kreds and Forrest
Neeld helped open tho new road.

Carl R. Gray, president of the

up his impression of the work of

a sentiment that was indorsed by
dl other speakers from tho ox

and I say to you, with firm con
viction, that of all tho business
assets which this stato affords,
this institution is by far tho
greatest.
"After all tho wealth on top of
