BURNS SURE OP RAILROAD
The Great Resources of Territory, lrrl
gallon and Timber Attractive to Road
President Davidson of tho Ore
gon & Western Colonization Co.
wliilo in tho city this week ex
pressed his confidence of thin
city getting ti railroad. Ho says
it is tho no icy ot railroads in.'iv
days to ko after business in all
parts of its territory and that
jt was not reasonable to oxpei Lj
lim, l oimnlv nnoa rlii'nlirrli n l.io
nirrieiiltiirnrRGctioii such ns Hur
ney Valley without covering tho
territory completely.
Farmers are not expected to
haul their products and material
to a distant railroad in these days.
They are furnished with trans
portation just as quickly and as
conveniently as it is possible.
With the largo productive area
in the northern part of this val
ley furnishing immediate tonnage
it is generally conceded that this
territory will have immediate
consideration once the main line
is built into the Valloy. The
only available timber supply be
ing to tho north of tho valley and
the development of tho Silvies ir
rigation project are strong factors
in bringing immediato considera
tion to this portion of the valley.
These are our best cards and will
be the means of bringing us a
line of road just as soon as it can
be taken up.
The timber and irrigation will
also develop that territory in ad
vance of less favored sections as
no doubt the irrigation system
will be taken up in units and en
larged upon gradually as condi
tions will permit.
LAND SCHOOLS ALL OVER STATE.
(Continued from page 1.)
yancement of the state's agricul
tural resources. The slogan will
be, "Land Schools for the Coun
try," and it is believed that land
schools established in various
parts of the state under the sup
ervision of the state agricultural
college will have a wonderfully
beneficial effect upon the agricul
tural development and the future
prosperity of the state.
The excursion party will return
to Portland early Saturday morn
ing. Delegations from valley
towns will join the party at Cor
vallis. WE SHOULD TRY FLAX.
Two years ago fine specimens
of flax raised on Wm. Hanley's
"Barley Farm" was on exhibi
tion at the county fair. Those
who have some knowledge of
conditions say that Harney coun
ty is well adapted to the raising
of flax and our farmers should
take advantage of the offer of
the American Linseed Oil Co. to
try it
To encourage the raising of
flax by Oregon farmers, E. H.
Smith, western seed manager of
the American Linseed Oil Com
pany, has announced that his
firm will distribute up to 100
bushels of seed flax if each
rancher will sow one-quarter
bushel to one-half acre of land
according to directions accompa
nying each package of 14 pounds
of seed. This seed will be ship
ped freight prepaid upon appli
cation to the Portland Linseed
Oil Works. This should give each
grower from 8 to 12 bushels of
seed which he may retain uncon
ditionally for the next year.
DRY FARMING ALFALFA SLED.
The growing of alfalfa on the
dry-farming lands of Oregon in
cultivated rows for the produc
tion of seed has been the special
dry-farming hobby of Prof. II.
D. Scudder of the Oregon Agri
cultural College. He has advo
cated this plan widely throughout
Eastern Oregon for the past five
years, and is begining to see
practical results on a large scale.
A prominent wheat farmer at
Arlington has planned to put in
160 acres of alfalfa on his dry
land, and has asked the agrono
my department of the college for
special instructions and for the
best seed. Another man, one of
the largest wheat farmers in
Gilliam County, is to put in 1,000
acres of alfalfa this spring. Tho
greater number of letters coming
to Prof Scudder and all parts of
eastern and central Oregon on
this subject indicates tho first
great change for the better in
dry-farming agriculture there.
You judge a man not by what
ho promises to do, but by what
he has done. This is tho only
true test. Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy judged by this standard
has no superior. People every
where speak of it in tho highest
terms of praise. For sale by all
dealers.
Always ready for job printing.
