wo hurried around tho block and
met her again. Tho result of
this tack was that I continued on
down tho street having no
further desire to probe the mat
ter with the lady as tho cold re
ception I got on second meeting
was unmistakable.
I went to the Senator and told
him of the chilly stare I had re
ceived, where all was to have
been kindness, when he made
the startling confession that
while lie had promised to make
it right at home ho had not figur
ed that I was going to start in on
him as soon as I did, and that
before he had a chance to lay
the dust, on reaching home one
evening he found in his wife's
hand the newspaper containing
between my family and that of
Mr. Fairbanks, I would point out
innumerable traits of character
and many marks of distinction
in his features. Homeh D.WEN-rouT.

this elongated caricature. He
was tired, he said, and not wish
ing to discuss the matter that
evening had leaned back and lis
tened to her condemnation of me
and the picture while she exacted
the promise then and there that
all such relationship, especially
where it was not closer than
cousinship should be ignored.
"But yesterday," he said, "I
explained to Mrs. Fairbanks that
you were to go ahead with me,
and possibly make me better
known than some of the other
members of the senate, owing to
the publicity furnished through
the caricatures."
"Now," he continued, "you
may come to my house in safety
and Mrs. Fairbanks will always
greet you on the street." He
said further "You may have no
fears, that while I must apologize
for being a little late in carrying
out my part of our understand
ing, yet I have arranged every
thing now so it will be pleasant
sailing."
As Fairbanks grew stouter
after he became Vice-President
owing perhaps to the difference
in effort required in that job and
his former position, I kept pace
with his change. There has al
ways been one amusing side of
Fairbanks and that is the un
merited reputation he has of be
ing cold and dry in his remarks
and unappreciative of a joke.
The night of Joe Cannon's fa
mous dinner to the Gridiron Club,
Fairbanks started to speak at
just 12 o'clock after about all of
the humorists and near humor
ists of the country had spoken
and many people groaned think
ing that they were in for a dose
of dry statistical talk. But the
Vice-President's speech was
funnier by miles than any speech
of the evening and also about
the shortest. His wit and sar
casm on that occasion beat any
thing heard in Washington dur
ing that particular year.
Had I not made some remarks
at the beginning of this article
about the relationship that exists
